Ray Award Honoree Peter Barclae Inspires Others to Give

“Peter Barclae understands the joy of giving and encourages others to join him,” said Laura Gabriel, LTU’s director of development for the College of Engineering.

His leadership on LTU’s Giving Day is a perfect example: Peter, who joined Phi Kappa Upsilon while pursuing a degree in electrical engineering in the 1980s, initiated a matching gift challenge that tripled the amount of the fraternity’s scholarship. The scholarship was designed about 20 years ago to help students who needed financial assistance pay for their education.

“He created an excitement about giving to his fraternity’s endowed scholarship that just didn’t exist before,” Laura said. “Now, instead of helping one student, this scholarship helps multiple students.”

The LTU alum’s enthusiasm for giving back to the University doesn’t end there; he also pays it forward by supporting Blue Devil Motorsports. In fact, a recent donation to the Aero Design Team enabled their trip to California to compete in the SAE Aero Design West competition. It was the largest donation the team had ever received.

The team was so grateful, they wanted to honor Peter with his name on the plane; after making their request known to Peter, he suggested they use the name of his two-year-old granddaughter, Lilah, instead.

“The students and the people at the competition loved having the named Lilah on the plane,” Laura said.

Peter, who loves flying and is a certified airline transport pilot, returned to campus for the team’s final presentation in April. Out of 60 registered teams, the team came in 8th overall and 6th in flight.

Peter is the president of Cynba International and former CEO for electronic manufacturing services company Firstronic, LLC.
