Cyndi Spotts Memorializes Long-Time LTU Staffer with an Endowed Scholarship

Cyndi Spotts worked with Laura Affer in LTU’s Student Affairs office for nearly 20 years.

“She had the most Blue Devil spirit no matter what we were doing,” said Cyndi, who is now a vice president in LTU’s Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement office. “She really loved LTU and the students and brought such wonderful positivity to our campus.”

In her role as LTU’s assistant director of international programs, Laura wasn’t afraid to cut through red tape on student visas, work permit applications and other immigration-related paperwork, ensuring their eligibility to work and study in the U.S. “She was phenomenal with the international students and very thorough in her job,” Cyndi said.

When Laura passed away after a short bout with cancer last year, Cyndi was determined to keep the memory of her good friend alive. A scholarship endowed in Laura’s name seemed an ideal way to pay tribute to someone whose life centered around education; as an endowed scholarship, the fund can spin off financial assistance to students for years to come.

“She really appreciated and valued what a college degree can do for a student, and the big difference it made in their life and in their family’s lives,” said Cyndi, who initiated her scholarship gift last fall.

The Laura Affer Endowed Scholarship is designed to be awarded to full-time undergraduate students who are in good academic standing and have demonstrated financial need, making the scholarship accessible to a broader range of students.

As Laura would have preferred.

“Being inclusive embodies Laura’s spirit for education and for our students,” Cyndi added.
