Accidents may include slip and falls, vehicle crashes, sports injuries, laboratory incidents, equipment injuries, or other situations resulting in injury or property damage.
If someone is seriously injured or in immediate danger, call the City of Southfield Emergency Services at 911 immediately.
Contact the LTU Department of Campus Safety at 248.204.3945 to report the accident and request assistance.
Remain calm and assess the situation. Do not move an injured person unless they are in immediate danger from fire, traffic, electrical hazards, or other unsafe conditions.
Provide the exact location of the accident, including building name, room number, parking lot, or nearby landmarks. Stay on the line with emergency dispatchers and follow all instructions provided.
If trained to do so, provide basic first aid or CPR until emergency responders arrive. Do not provide medical treatment beyond your level of training.
Keep the area clear and safe for emergency responders. If possible, prevent additional accidents or injuries by warning others about hazards such as spills, broken glass, exposed wires, or damaged equipment.
If the accident involves a vehicle, remain at the scene unless emergency medical treatment is needed. Exchange information as appropriate and cooperate with Campus Safety and law enforcement personnel.
Report hazardous conditions, unsafe equipment, or damaged property to Campus Safety or university personnel as soon as possible.
Students involved in laboratory, shop, or maintenance accidents should immediately notify the supervising faculty or staff member in addition to Campus Safety.
Do not post photographs, videos, or personal information related to the accident on social media. Respect the privacy and dignity of those involved.
Follow all instructions provided by Campus Safety officers, emergency responders, faculty, staff, and university officials during and after the incident.
Monitor official campus communications through emergency alerts, email, text notifications, the university website, and official social media accounts during major incidents or campus disruptions.
Prompt reporting and responsible actions during accidents help protect the safety and well-being of the campus community.
An active shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area. Active shooter incidents are often unpredictable and may evolve rapidly. Students should remain alert, stay calm, and act quickly to protect themselves and others.
If you become aware of an active shooter or armed intruder, call 911 as soon as it is safe to do so. Contact the LTU Department of Campus Safety at 248.204.3945 if possible and provide the location of the incident, description of the suspect, type of weapon involved, and any known injuries.
LTU follows “Run, Hide, Fight” protocol. “Run, Hide, Fight” is an internationally recognized active-threat and active-shooter response protocol endorsed by federal agencies including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). Students should follow the “Run, Hide, Fight” during an active shooter emergency:
If there is a safe path available, evacuate the area immediately. Leave belongings behind. Encourage others to leave if possible, but do not delay your escape. Keep your hands visible. Prevent others from entering the danger area if safe to do so. Move far away from the incident location and seek secure shelter. Once safe, call 911 and Campus Safety.
If evacuation is not possible, shelter in place immediately. Go to the nearest room or office. Lock and barricade doors using furniture or other heavy objects. Turn off lights. Silence cell phones and electronic devices. Close blinds and stay away from doors and windows. Remain quiet and out of sight. Do not open doors for anyone unless you can confirm they are law enforcement officers or emergency personnel.
As a last resort, and only if your life is in immediate danger, attempt to disrupt or incapacitate the attacker. Use available objects as improvised weapons. Act aggressively and commit fully to your actions. Work together with others if possible.
When law enforcement arrives, remain calm and follow all instructions immediately. Keep your hands empty, raised, and visible at all times. Avoid sudden movements or pointing. Do not stop officers to ask questions or request assistance while they are securing the area.
Once in a safe location, remain there until university officials or law enforcement provide further instructions.
Monitor official campus communications through emergency alerts, email, text notifications, the university website, and official social media accounts for updates and instructions.
After the incident, counseling and support services may be available through LTU Clinical Counseling and other university resources.
Quick action, awareness, and following the Run, Hide, Fight protocol can help save lives during an active shooter incident.
Bomb threats may be received by phone, email, written message, social media, or verbal communication. All bomb threats must be treated seriously until evaluated by law enforcement and emergency personnel.
If you receive a bomb threat by telephone, remain calm and keep the caller on the line as long as possible. Try to gather information such as the location of the device, time of detonation, type of device, reason for the threat, and characteristics of the caller’s voice or background noises.
If possible, write down the exact wording of the threat and immediately report the incident to the LTU Department of Campus Safety at 248.204.3945 and call 911.
If a bomb threat is received electronically, do not delete the message. Preserve emails, texts, voicemails, or social media communications and report them immediately to Campus Safety.
Do not touch, move, or investigate suspicious packages or objects. Move away from the area and prevent others from approaching the item.
If instructed to evacuate, leave the building immediately using the nearest safe exit. Take personal belongings only if they are immediately available and doing so will not delay evacuation.
Do not use elevators during an evacuation unless directed otherwise by emergency personnel.
Follow all instructions from Campus Safety officers, law enforcement, firefighters, Housing staff, and LTU officials.
Avoid using cell phones, radios, or electronic devices near suspicious objects if instructed by emergency responders, as some devices could potentially trigger explosive devices.
Once outside, move to a safe location away from buildings, parking lots, vehicles, and emergency response operations. Remain at the designated assembly area until further instructions are provided.
Do not re-enter evacuated buildings until authorized by emergency responders or university officials.
Remain alert for suspicious behavior, unattended bags, backpacks, or unusual items and report concerns immediately to Campus Safety.
Monitor official campus communications through emergency alerts, email, text notifications, the university website, and official social media accounts for instructions and updates.
Do not spread rumors, share unverified information, or post details about the incident on social media while emergency operations are ongoing.
Prompt reporting, calm evacuation, and cooperation with emergency personnel are essential during bomb threat incidents and help protect the safety of the campus community.
Civil disturbances may include protests, demonstrations, fights, riots, unlawful assemblies, vandalism, or other disruptive behavior that threatens the safety of individuals or interferes with university operations.
Students are encouraged to remain calm and avoid confrontations during civil disturbances. Respect the rights of others to lawful expression while prioritizing personal safety and following university policies and lawful directives from authorities.
If a situation becomes violent, threatening, or dangerous, immediately leave the area if it is safe to do so. Move to a secure location away from crowds, disturbances, or unsafe conditions.
Call 9-1-1 if there is an immediate threat to life or safety. Contact the LTU Department of Campus Safety at 248.204.3945 to report disturbances, threats, injuries, vandalism, or suspicious activity.
Avoid provoking or engaging individuals involved in disruptive or aggressive behavior. Do not attempt to intervene physically in fights, riots, or violent situations.
Follow all instructions provided by Campus Safety officers, law enforcement, Housing staff, and LTU officials. Emergency personnel may direct students to evacuate, shelter in place, avoid specific areas, or relocate to safer locations.
If instructed to shelter in place, remain indoors, secure doors if possible, stay away from windows, and continue monitoring official campus communications for updates and instructions.
Avoid areas where crowds are gathering or where emergency responders are actively working. Stay alert for blocked roadways, damaged property, thrown objects, or other hazards.
Do not carry or possess weapons or objects that could be interpreted as weapons during demonstrations or disturbances. LTU is private property and is weapons free campus.
Students should avoid spreading rumors or sharing unverified information through social media, text messages, or other communication platforms during active incidents.
If safe to do so, assist others who may need help leaving the area, including individuals with disabilities or those unfamiliar with campus.
Document concerns or damages through proper university reporting procedures after the incident has stabilized, rather than during active disturbances.
Monitor official campus communications through emergency alerts, email, text notifications, the university website, and official social media accounts for ongoing updates.
Prompt reporting, calm decision-making, and cooperation with emergency personnel are essential during civil disturbances and help protect the safety of the campus community.
Whenever a fire alarm sounds, treat the alarm as a real emergency and begin evacuation immediately. Do not assume the alarm is false or part of a drill unless instructed otherwise by university officials or emergency responders.
If you discover smoke or fire, activate the nearest fire alarm pull station if it is safe to do so. Call 911 immediately and contact the LTU Department of Campus Safety at 248.204.3945.
Evacuate the building immediately using the nearest safe exit. Close doors behind you as you leave if possible.
Do not use elevators during a fire alarm or fire emergency. Use stairwells and proceed calmly and quickly out of the building.
If smoke is present, stay low to the ground where air may be clearer. Cover your nose and mouth if necessary.
Before opening a closed door, feel the door with the back of your hand. If the door is hot, do not open it. Use an alternate exit if available.
If you are unable to leave your room or area safely, stay inside and call 911 and Campus Safety. Place a towel or clothing under the door to help keep smoke out and signal from a window if possible.
Once outside, move to a safe location away from the building and emergency response operations. Follow instructions from Campus Safety officers, Housing staff, firefighters, and university officials.
Do not re-enter the building until authorized to do so by emergency responders or university officials, even if alarms stop sounding.
Students living in residence halls should familiarize themselves with building evacuation routes, exits, and designated assembly areas in advance.
Do not tamper with fire alarms, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, sprinkler systems, or other fire safety equipment. Misuse of fire safety equipment may violate university policy and state law.
Report blocked exits, fire hazards, malfunctioning alarms, or damaged safety equipment to Campus Safety immediately.
Remain attentive to official campus communications through emergency alerts, email, text notifications, the university website, and official social media accounts during significant incidents.
Prompt evacuation and immediate response during fire alarms help protect lives and support emergency responders during critical situations.
Flooding may result from severe weather, heavy rainfall, broken water mains, plumbing failures, sprinkler activation, or other water intrusion incidents. Flood conditions can create electrical hazards, structural damage, slip hazards, and unsafe living conditions.
If flooding presents an immediate danger to life or safety, call the City of Southfield Emergency Services at 911 immediately.
Contact the LTU Department of Campus Safety at 248.204.3945 to report flooding, water intrusion, or hazardous conditions on campus.
Avoid walking, driving, or riding through flooded areas. Even shallow water may conceal hazards such as electrical equipment, debris, open drains, or slippery surfaces.
Stay away from standing water near electrical outlets, appliances, power cords, or electrical equipment. Assume flooded electrical areas are dangerous until cleared by authorized personnel.
If safe to do so, move personal belongings, electronics, and valuables away from water. Disconnect electrical equipment only if you can do so safely and without standing in water.
Do not attempt to clean major flooding, sewage backups, or hazardous water spills yourself. Notify Campus Safety or Facilities personnel for assistance.
If instructed to evacuate, leave the area immediately using designated evacuation routes. Do not use elevators in flooded buildings or during severe weather events.
Students living in residence halls should follow instructions provided by Residence Life staff, Campus Safety, and university officials regarding relocation, shelter areas, or temporary housing arrangements.
Remain alert for slipping hazards, damaged ceilings, falling debris, mold concerns, and weakened structures following flooding incidents.
Monitor official campus communications through emergency alerts, email, text notifications, the university website, and official social media accounts for updates and instructions.
Avoid entering restricted or barricaded areas until university officials determine conditions are safe.
If severe weather accompanies flooding, move to an appropriate shelter location and follow all severe weather emergency procedures.
Report injuries, hazardous conditions, blocked exits, or individuals needing assistance to Campus Safety immediately.
Do not post rumors or unverified information regarding flooding conditions or campus closures on social media.
Prompt reporting and careful response during flooding incidents help protect personal safety and reduce damage to campus property.
A medical emergency may include serious injury, difficulty breathing, chest pain, loss of consciousness, seizures, severe bleeding, allergic reactions, suspected overdose, head injury, or any condition requiring immediate medical attention.

Provide the exact location of the emergency, including building name, room number, floor, or nearby landmarks. Stay on the line with emergency dispatchers and follow all instructions provided.
If trained to do so, provide first aid or CPR until emergency responders arrive. If an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is available nearby, retrieve and use it according to the device instructions.
Do not give food, drink, or medication to an ill or injured person unless directed by medical personnel.
Keep the area clear and allow emergency responders access to the scene. Assign someone to meet responding personnel outside the building if possible.
If exposure to blood or bodily fluids occurs, avoid direct contact whenever possible and notify emergency responders or university personnel.
Students are encouraged to carry important medical information, emergency contacts, allergy information, and necessary medications with them at all times.
Report unsafe conditions, hazardous materials, or health concerns to Campus Safety immediately.
Do not post photographs, videos, or personal information about medical emergencies on social media. Respect the privacy and dignity of those involved.
Follow all directions provided by emergency responders, Campus Safety officers, and university officials during and after a medical emergency.

There are Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) in buildings around campus. The Campus Community is encouraged to become familiar with the location of building AEDs should they be needed in an emergency.
A mental health emergency may include suicidal thoughts or statements, threats of self-harm, threats toward others, severe emotional distress, panic attacks, hallucinations, disorientation, extreme behavioral changes, or an inability to care for oneself safely.
If you or another person is in immediate danger, call 911 and Campus Safety (248.204.3945) immediately. Stay with the person if it is safe to do so and remain calm. Speak in a supportive and non-threatening manner. Do not argue, threaten, or attempt to physically restrain someone unless necessary to prevent immediate harm.
If the situation is not immediately life-threatening, contact campus counseling services, Residence Life staff, a faculty member, Campus Safety, or another trusted university official for assistance.
Take all statements about suicide or self-harm seriously. Do not dismiss comments such as “I can’t do this anymore,” “Everyone would be better off without me,” or similar statements. Encourage the individual to seek professional help and remain with them until assistance arrives if possible.
If a person appears highly distressed, give them space and reduce stimulation when possible. Move to a quieter area if safe to do so. Listen without judgment and avoid criticizing or minimizing their feelings.
Do not leave an individual alone if they appear to be a danger to themselves or others. Remove access to potential weapons or dangerous objects only if it can be done safely.
If you are experiencing a mental health crisis yourself, seek help immediately by contacting counseling services, a trusted friend or family member, Campus Safety, or emergency services. If available, use campus crisis hotlines or community mental health resources.
Residence hall staff, faculty, and students should report concerning behavior when they observe significant changes in mood, threats, disruptive behavior, extreme withdrawal, or signs that a student may be unable to care for themselves safely.
Follow all instructions provided by emergency responders, counselors, Campus Safety officers, or university officials during a mental health emergency.
Protect the privacy and dignity of the individual involved. Do not record, photograph, or share information about the incident on social media.
After the immediate emergency has passed, students are encouraged to utilize campus counseling resources, employee assistance programs if applicable, student support services, or community mental health providers for ongoing support.
