Luminary Award Honoree: The Enduring Impact of Dr. Jerry Crist

Dr. Jerry Crist impacted many students throughout his 45-year LTU career. Not only as a chemistry professor, but as the University’s scholarship committee chair, faculty advisor, department chairs for chemistry and natural sciences, and interim dean of students.

“Dr. Crist is not just an ordinary professor. His whole teaching style reflects that he cares about students in general,” wrote one student in an LTU (then, LIT) Tech News story early in Dr. Crist’s career. “Even though he teaches one of the hardest freshman classes in school, he does everything he can to help a student pass and learn something.”

Dr. Crist – who earned M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in inorganic chemistry from Ohio State University – is also remembered as a fierce advocate for scholarships who gave special attention to deserving students in need of tuition assistance.

“The most important way Dr. Crist affected me was by giving me the scholarship that made my education possible,” said Bridget Sanders (’99), a former chemistry student.

“Without the full academic scholarship, LTU would not have been a viable option for me financially.  That level of impact on someone’s life and education is hard to quantify but I do know it’s huge.”

His impact was especially evident in 2010 when an anonymous donor established a scholarship in his name. Since then, over 250 people have donated to the ‘Arts + Sciences Scholarship in Honor of Dr. Crist.’

Nearly $250,000 has been contributed to the fund, which continues to be popular with donors.
