Smart Move: LTU’s CoBIT brings artificial intelligence into the business classroom

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Lawrence Technological University’s College of Business and Information Technology is expanding its commitment to emerging technologies, innovation, and industry relevance with the launch of a new Undergraduate Certificate in AI for Business.

The nine-credit program prepares students to harness the power of artificial intelligence, data, and digital tools to drive smarter business decisions and enhance career readiness.

“The world of business is being transformed by AI and data analytics,” said Matthew Cole, dean, CoBIT. “Employers are looking for graduates who can bridge the gap between strategy and technology. This certificate gives our students that critical edge.”

Practical Skills for the Digital Economy

Developed in response to the accelerating demand for tech-savvy business professionals, the new certificate offers an interdisciplinary approach that combines business theory, applied analytics, and emerging AI technologies.

The program aligns with CoBIT’s mission to “create innovative business professionals equipped with technological skills using an interdisciplinary approach emphasizing theory and practice.”

The AI for Business Undergraduate Certificate includes three core courses:

  • Foundations of AI for Business
  • Introduction to Business Data Analytics
  • Information Technology Management

Together, these courses equip students with the knowledge and skills to apply AI tools in marketing, finance, management, and operations — preparing them for dynamic roles in data-driven organizations.

Integrated and Accessible Across LTU

The certificate will be integrated into CoBIT’s undergraduate degrees in Business AdministrationBusiness Data Analytics, and Information Technology beginning with the Spring 2026 semester. Importantly, any LTU undergraduate student can earn the certificate by using elective credits, making it an accessible opportunity for students across disciplines to build cross-functional expertise.

“Whether you’re majoring in engineering, design, or architecture, understanding how AI impacts business strategy gives you a major competitive advantage,” Cole said.

Graduate Expansion Coming in Fall 2026

Building on the momentum of the undergraduate launch, CoBIT faculty are developing a 12-credit Graduate Certificate in AI for Business targeted for Fall 2026. This advanced credential will serve working professionals and recent graduates who want to strengthen their understanding of applied AI and data analytics in business environments.

Both certificate programs are designed as powerful recruitment tools: For prospective undergraduates, the built-in AI credential signals immediate professional value and relevance. For graduate learners, the specialized program offers a fast, focused way to acquire the most in-demand technical and analytical skills driving modern business success.

“These programs reflect our proactive approach to preparing LTU graduates for tomorrow’s careers,” Cole said. “We’re teaching how to innovate with intelligence.”
