James Abernethy Scholarship

Due Date: January 15, 2025

The Building Enclosure Council of Greater Detroit (BEC-GD), in partnership with Lawrence Technological University, is pleased to offer an annual scholarship open to all LTU students currently enrolled in the College of Architecture and Design.

BEC-GD is part of a national network founded jointly by the American Institute of Architects and the National Institute of Building Sciences to foster effective performance of building enclosures. The mission of the Building Enclosure Council is to promote and encourage discussion, training, education, technology transfer, and exchange information about local and national issues and cases, relevant weather conditions, and information about building enclosure (envelope) design and related building science.
The goal of this scholarship is to offer eligible students an opportunity to submit original work that showcases their knowledge of building enclosures. Students will also have the opportunity to expand their understanding of building enclosure design and network with construction professionals of all disciplines to build  relationships and support their future careers through continued engagement with BEC-GD.

Submission Requirements:

  • Submissions are to be based on one project, chosen by the student from their current or past course work in architecture, demonstrating an understanding of appropriate and climate-specific enclosure design.
  • Include renderings, graphics, and/or details showing overall project context and how the proposed enclosure design addresses enhanced energy efficiency, durability, and/or environmental performance
  • Submit an essay between 600 and 1,000 words meeting the following requirements:
    • Briefly describe the project.
    • Describe how building science principles informed the enclosure design.
    • Discuss why enhanced enclosure performance is an important factor to consider in the design of buildings and your specific project.
    • Essays and graphic submissions should be combined into a single PDF that is no larger than 50mb in size.

Awards

  • The annual recipient will receive a $2,500 scholarship award.
  • The scholarship recipient, and two runners-up, will receive access to one year’s worth of BEC-GD event attendance, free of charge, with opportunities to learn from and network with practicing enclosure professionals (approximate retail value of $150).
Winner will be announced in February 2025.
