This course explores the graphic design software, Adobe InDesign, commonly used by professionals in document design and production for both print and online formats. Students will be introduced to both basic and more advanced functions through class discussion, readings and specific design projects customized to utilize one or more tools found in the software program. Students will also be prepared to take the Adobe Certified Professional Exam by completing a practice exam.

Duration: 15 Weeks

Curriculum

Each session is three hours long and offered once per week.

Explore InDesign Workspace

Students begin to explore the InDesign interface. Discussion will include the importance of understanding in the design community. They will be introduced to many of the tools, palettes, menu selections, and techniques we will be using in class. Students will use this new knowledge to put together a small advertisement using these skills.

Working with Type in InDesign

Students will discuss type styles and classifications. They will learn to use the basics of the Text tool as well as the Character and Paragraph windows.

In this lesson, you will learn how to do the following:

  • Use the Character window for basic font style, size, alignment, color and  Character styles window, tracking, kerning and leading
  • Use the paragraph window to select alignment, hyphenation, rules, drop caps
  • Text Frame Options

Discovering Master Pages

Students will discover how to set up and use basic Master Pages, discuss design process, and learn basic design vocabulary.

Working with InDesign's Styles

Defining Character and Paragraph Styles

In this lesson, you will learn how to do the following:

  • Create and use multiple character styles using the Character styles window
  • Create and utilize basic Paragraph styles
  • Use typographic terminology as it pertains to page layout
  • Text Frame Options

Working with Graphics in InDesign

In this lesson, you will learn how to do the following:

  • Use the Shape tools
  • Pathfinder window
  • Links panel
  • Importing Graphics, Photos, or other imagery
  • Object styles
  • Text Wrap window

Using Color Panels

In this lesson, you will learn how to do the following:
