City of Richmond Fire Station

Engineering
Civil and Architectural Engineering
Student Project

With the goal of replacing one of the state’s oldest chartered fire departments, the 2  Design Group set out to replace the historic, City of Richmond’s Volunteer Fire Department’s 1885 building, with a modern fire station. The new building will focus on sustainability, occupant health and resilience. In pursuit of this goal the team has performed an analysis of architectural, structural, mechanical, lighting design and construction engineering. The architectural design plan includes dividing the building into three sections: an administrative wing, an Apparatus Bay for vehicles and equipment (with an adjacent decontamination room), and modern living quarters for the firefighters to exercise, relax and sleep while on duty.

Revitalizing alarm and emergency lighting systems to ensure optimal performance during fire responses and addressing issues of sustainability and site management through construction management; were just some of the proposed modernization methods used in this project. As part of the focus on sustainability and occupant health, LEED and WELL accreditations were pursued. LEED Gold and WELL Silver were achieved by the team, with the possibility of WELL Gold once post-construction testing and activities are performed. The new Richmond Fire Station will serve the growing needs of its community as well as stand as an example of the possibilities for sustainability in building design, for years to come.
