Southfield Community Center

Engineering
Civil + Architectural Engineering
Student Project

The Alpine AE student team, designed the Southfield Community Center with the purpose of providing a community building where residents can come together to improve themselves both mentally and physically. The building would be located in the heart of the city, adjacent to both the Southfield Public Library and Southfield Municipal Campus, for ease of access to residents. The two-story development would include features such as a spacious welcome center with a unique two-story rock-climbing wall, fitness center, café, daycare center, and multipurpose rooms, in order to best serve the needs of the community.

Students working on the Southfield Community Center Project accepted the challenge of utilizing multiple disciplines of engineering to develop a new facility using real-world processes, to satisfy real-world needs. The multi-storied design proposed by the team, incorporated multiple building systems and techniques, that would enhance the overall purpose of the facility and establish a lasting presence in the heart of the city. A lateral force resisting system for structural support, a photovoltaic system on the roof for supplemental power, and reclaiming rain water for water closets; were just a few of the systems that the team was able to successfully incorporate into the buildings design proposal.
