» Program Overview

The Broadcast Media Arts (BMA) program provides hands-on training in radio, television, and digital media production. Designed for students who want to launch a career in broadcasting without committing to a four-year degree, this program prepares graduates for entry-level roles at radio stations, television stations, audio and video production facilities, and podcasting companies.

BMA students gain real-world experience in:

  • Vocal & Visual Performance– Creating and performing on-air breaks and news reports, hosting and co-hosting podcasts, voice-over talent and on-location reporting.
  • Radio & Audio Production– Harnessing vocal talent, script writing, editing audio content
  • Television & Video Production– Operating cameras, producing segments, and editing video content
  • Editing & Graphics– Using non-linear editing software to refine audio and video projects
  • Marketing– Creating a professional portfolio
  • Broadcast Operations– Understanding the roles and responsibilities within modern radio, TV, and broadcast media environments

Upon completion, graduates will have the technical skills and industry knowledge to create, produce, and distribute professional-quality content across multiple platforms. Whether pursuing careers in radio, television, podcasting, or digital broadcasting, BMA graduates will be ready to step into the industry with confidence.

Fundamentals of Radio

This course introduces the fundamentals of the radio industry, focusing on communication skills, audience engagement, and digital production techniques. Students will develop vocal performance skills, learn podcasting basics, and gain hands-on experience with digital editing software like Adobe Audition. By the end of the course, students will have produced their own audio projects, live podcasts, and DJ shows.

This course introduces students to professional video production equipment, including cameras, microphones, and lighting. Students will learn on-camera performance techniques, shot composition, and industry terminology, while also critically analyzing professional video production. Career opportunities in broadcast television will also be explored.

Building on the skills from Fundamentals of Radio, this course dives deeper into radio production, digital editing, and audience engagement. Students will refine their DJ skills with live reads, station promos, news and weather reports, while growing confidence using Adobe Audition and studio equipment.  Further development of proper podcasting structure, and audience interaction.

Key Learning Outcomes:

  • Perform advanced DJ shows, including live reads and news reports
  • Engage target audiences across different radio formats
  • Write and perform billboards, show prep breaks, and station promos

On-Air Radio

This advanced course focuses on building a professional radio demo, showcasing students’ best DJ breaks, commercial productions, and station promos. Students will also develop professional resumes, cover letters, and a digital portfolio to launch their careers.

In this capstone course, students will take their video production skills to the next level by writing, shooting, and editing their own professional video projects. They will conduct interviews, shoot B-roll, and produce content similar to real-world broadcast assignments.

Use Your Cell Phone as a Document Camera in Zoom

  • What you will need to have and do
  • Download the mobile Zoom app (either App Store or Google Play)
  • Have your phone plugged in
  • Set up video stand phone holder

From Computer

Log in and start your Zoom session with participants

From Phone

  • Start the Zoom session on your phone app (suggest setting your phone to “Do not disturb” since your phone screen will be seen in Zoom)
  • Type in the Meeting ID and Join
  • Do not use phone audio option to avoid feedback
  • Select “share content” and “screen” to share your cell phone’s screen in your Zoom session
  • Select “start broadcast” from Zoom app. The home screen of your cell phone is now being shared with your participants.

To use your cell phone as a makeshift document camera

  • Open (swipe to switch apps) and select the camera app on your phone
  • Start in photo mode and aim the camera at whatever materials you would like to share
  • This is where you will have to position what you want to share to get the best view – but you will see ‘how you are doing’ in the main Zoom session.
