Tucked away in the heart of the Buell Management Building lies Lawrence Technological University’s library–an inviting sanctuary, a treasure trove of knowledge, and an oasis of camaraderie. This vibrant hub thrives as a judgment-free haven, dedicated to propelling the intellectual pursuits of students, faculty, and staff. An intellectual wonderland, where walls breathe with wisdom and creativity knows no bounds.
Imagine a place where every inquiry, every quest for understanding, is met with boundless resources, expert guidance, and innovation. Information literacy takes center stage with over 837,000 physical books and eBooks, 110,000 journals, and 100 databases. Here, knowledge truly knows no bounds, thanks to interlibrary loans and the Michigan Electronic Library (MeL) system, ensuring that every curiosity finds its answer.
LTU’s library is more than a repository of books and databases; it is a custodian of unique collections, each one a portal to history and innovation. The Albert Kahn Library Collection, a gift from Albert Kahn Associates, Inc., in 1978, houses nearly 3,000 items from the iconic Detroit architect, Albert Kahn. The collection paints a vivid picture of the early 20th century, filled with photographs, scrapbooks, idea books, and even furniture from that era. Meanwhile, the LTU Scholars Commons stands as a living testament to the university's intellectual prowess, housing the collective works of LTU faculty and students, from papers and books to posters, creative endeavors, and invaluable datasets.
As you enter, you are greeted with a diversity of study spaces, from quiet individual carrels to lively booths and comfy chairs. The garden also creates an inviting environment to immerse yourself in your work without distractions. What sets this place apart is the staff, who become your guides on your academic journey and make an effort to not only just recognize your face but also learn your name.
There are over 40 student organizations and clubs on campus that are a mix of academic, Greek, and student interests. Students are welcome to start an organization or club on campus. Student interest organizations are created to help students find their place on campus and connect with like-minded students. Some great examples of such organizations are the Society of Dramatic Arts (SODA), the Sexuality and Gender Alliance (SAGA), Black student Union (BSU) Infinite Machine, LTU Swing, CRU, and many more! Organizations are able to request money from the student government to host various events on campus.
There are also various academic organizations on campus in addition to the student interest groups. These organizations are a great resource for students who wish to network with other students in their major or college and create relations with professionals in the field. Examples of such organizations are the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS), American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers), the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), and more. These connections not only aid in securing future employment but also building and creating new friendships.
It is not just about books and research here; it is about fostering a supportive and welcoming community. The library staff collaborates with various university departments and services, creating a network that ensures your success, including partnerships with the Academic Achievement Center, Horldt Writing Center, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Career Services, Clinical Counseling, Athletics, and Student Life. The LTU library is your guide through your journey of academia.
Beyond academia, LTU’s library is a place where culture and entertainment come alive. Discover the Human Library, where real-life stories await your ears (https://humanlibrary.org/), engage in lively book discussions, and meet authors, editors, and poets, who breathe passion into their work. Join panel discussions that challenge your thinking or seek solace in the gentle presence of therapy dogs. If you are looking for hands-on creativity, the library offers many craft programs, such as knitting, crocheting, and creating your own sock monkeys. For those seeking a moment of relaxation, there are always jigsaw puzzles in progress, inviting you to take a well-deserved study break.
Whether you are a student, faculty member, alumnus, or staff member, the LTU library is not just a place; it's an experience. A place where you can engage in spontaneous conversations, unearth that perfect journal article, relax with therapy dogs, or simply find solace in mindful moments in our garden. It is not just a place for the pursuit of knowledge; but a place where you can immerse yourself in the joy of discovery.
