New AI for Business Certificate from CoBIT Strengthens Student Career Readiness

The College of Business + Information Technology (CoBIT) at Lawrence Technological University is introducing a new Undergraduate Certificate in AI for Business. This initiative is a practical response to the job market’s growing need for professionals who understand both business strategy and applied technology. The new certificate will also meet growing student demand for early AI credentials as AI systems continue to be integrated across industries.

“This effort supports CoBIT’s mission to ‘create innovative business professionals equipped with technological skills using an interdisciplinary approach emphasizing theory and practice,’” Matthew Cole, Dean of CoBIT, said.

Curriculum and Availability

Developed by Dean Cole and other CoBIT faculty, the nine-credit undergraduate certificate is designed to ensure LTU graduates are prepared to leverage business data and AI early in their careers. It comprises of three core courses:

  • Foundations of AI for Business

  • Information Technology Management
Integration and Access

The certificate will be integrated into CoBIT’s undergraduate degrees in business administration, business data analytics, and information technology beginning in the spring 2026 semester. Prospective Students

“This effort supports CoBIT’s mission to create innovative business professionals equipped with technological skills using an interdisciplinary approach emphasizing theory and practice.”
– Matthew Cole, Dean of CoBIT

Both the undergraduate and graduate certificates will draw substantial interest from students across the university and CoBIT. For undergraduates, the built-in AI certificate highlights the immediate professional value of the business administration, business data analytics, and information technology degrees. For graduate students, the specialized certificate offers working professionals and recent graduates a pathway to quickly acquire high demanding AI and data skills. The intentional focus on marketable skills enhances the competitiveness of CoBIT learners.

The new AI for Business certificate aligns with the vision expressed by President Tarek Sobh, PhD, PE In a 2021 interview with M2 Tech Cast, Sobh emphasized “The jobs of the future have no boundaries.” In a subsequent interview with MEA TV-Radio, he explained successful professionals are individuals who use interdisciplinary knowledge to obtain additional skills and add “microcredentials,” in the form of stackable certifications, to learn and advance their careers. Sobh stated Lawrence Tech is well positioned to be an institution to prepare students in such a manner, which he called “Industry 5.0.”

The innovative nature of the new AI for Business certificates offered by CoBIT will attract students and will gain the attention of prospective employers in a range of industries and organizations. “If there is any new academic program offering which could earn the description of ‘news you can use,’ it is certainly the new and innovative AI for Business certificates offered by CoBIT,” said Cole.
