Building Bridges Across Disciplines: Devesh Misra Leads LTU’s College of Engineering

Devesh Misra, PhD, Dean of the College of Engineering

A career defined by research across disciplines, Devesh Misra, PhD, steps into a new role at Lawrence Technological University as the dean for the College of Engineering. Beginning September 1, 2025, Misra brough industry experience and his inter-/multidisciplinary perspective to the college and in the departments of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanical, Robotics, and Industrial Engineering.

A Visionary Leader in Engineering Education

Misra joins LTU with a distinguished career spanning over four decades in academia, research, and leadership across multiple continents. He obtained a Bachelor of Technology in Metallurgical Engineering from the India Institute of Technology Varanasi (formerly the Institute of Technology, BHU), followed by a PhD in Metallurgy and Materials Science from the University of Cambridge, England. His professional career started at the Defense Metallurgical Research Laboratory in Hyderabad, India, where he rose to deputy director, establishing himself as a leading metallurgist.

In academia, he held various positions including Stuller Endowed Chair in Metallurgy and Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette; Freeport McMoRan Distinguished Chair in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering and Chair of the Department of Metallurgical, Materials and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Texas at El Paso. Given his strong belief of interdisciplinary thinking transcending boundaries, Misra promoted collaboration as the Founding Director of the Center for Structural and Functional Materials Research at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette with faculty from the Colleges of Science and Engineering.  He developed numerous successful national and international alliances with industries and academia to facilitate the growth of the center into the Institute for Materials Research and Innovation.

During his professional career, Misra visited several academic institutions, such as the University of Pennsylvania at Philadelphia; National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg; McMaster University, Canada; University of Oulu, Finland; University of Groningen, Netherlands; Pohang University of Science and Technology, South Korea; Tohoku University, Japan; and National University of Singapore.

Outstanding Scientific Contributions – Researcher and Innovator

Misra’s scientific contributions span several critical areas of materials science and engineering, biomedical, chemical, and mechanical engineering. During his tenure at the Defense Metallurgical Research Laboratory, he pioneered the use of Auger electron spectroscopy to study grain boundary segregation—a breakthrough that directly advanced the development and manufacturing of high-strength, high-toughness materials and deepened understanding of the fundamental mechanisms behind creep and fracture. His subsequent research embraced advanced manufacturing of metallic materials, nanostructured materials, biomedical devices, drug delivery, quantum dots, sensors, photovoltaic devices, and AI-guided materials design. Misra has produced over 1000 research publications, 150 presentations, and several United States patents for his scholarly work. He has received several national and international grants and has consistently been ranked in the world’s top 2% of scientists for his contribution to science and engineering by Stanford University. “These achievements were possible through collaboration with a large number of colleagues and researchers from different disciplines, both internal and external to the institution,” Misra said.

Misra’s exceptional contributions to the academic arena and the scientific world have been recognized through numerous prestigious awards. Some of them include:

  • Fellow of American Society for Materials International (2005), Institute of Minerals, Metals, and Materials (IOM3, London) (2002), Fellow of Alpha, Sigma, Mu (2018)
  • Jerry Silver Award (2015), Charles Hatchett Award (2007), and Lee Sun Award for contributions in Materials Science (2017)
  • Distinguished Alumnus Award of Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) (2013)
  • Young Scientist of the Year, Indian National Science Academy (1987)
Contributions to Scientific Journals

Misra’s academic and professional excellence extends to editorial roles in international journals, which continue to shape the scholarly discourse in different fields of science and engineering. His editorial career began as editor of the Transactions of the Indian Institute of Metals. He later served on the Board of Review for Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A and Materials Science and Engineering A. Currently, Misra is the editor-in-chief for three journals: Materials Technology: Advanced Performance Materials; Artificial Cells, Nanomedicine and Biotechnology; and the International Journal of Nanomedicine.

The prestigious recognitions and awards exemplify his educational vision, excellence in academic leadership, and expertise, which converge to benefit global scholars and institutions.

Known for being humble and compassionate, Misra has touched the lives of countless scholars, who characterize him as a distinguished professional in academia and the materials industry.

Vision for LTU

Misra’s forward-looking vision and breadth of experience will be instrumental in advancing the College of Engineering’s mission of excellence in education, research, and service to society. He will build upon the college’s strong foundation in teaching and research to address critical societal needs in areas such as advanced manufacturing, healthcare, energy, aerospace, and the environment. A key priority will be embedding artificial intelligence across the curriculum. To ensure LTU engineers are empowered with the ability to address the challenges of the 21st century, Misra will strengthen support for research, undergraduate, and graduate programs.

As dean, Misra will

  • Draw upon his scientific rigor and administrative acumen to develop partnerships with alumni, donors, and industries locally, nationally, and globally to advance the college’s mission of fostering technological innovation and developing thoughtful and impactful engineers.
