SOUTHFIELD—More than 450 Lawrence Technological University students will become Lawrence Technological University’s newest alumni at the university’s 94th Commencement Exercises, Saturday, May 6.
There will be two ceremonies, one at 10 a.m. for the LTU Colleges of Architecture and Design, Arts and Sciences, and Business and Information Technology, as well as Specs@LTU, the LTU-based successor to the Specs Howard School of Media Arts. There will be another ceremony at 1:30 p.m. for the LTU College of Engineering.

The speaker for both exercises will be author and cosmologist Janna Levin. A graduate of Barnard College of Columbia University and MIT, Levin’s scientific research focuses on the early universe, chaos, and black holes. She has worked at both Barnard College and the Ruskin School of Fine Art and Drawing at Oxford University. Her publications and other scholarly work, combining science and art, cover everything from relativity and quantum mechanics to the solar system and our home Milky Way galaxy.
She has hosted PBS’ Nova television program, the first woman to do so in 35 years, and her book, “A Madman Dreams of Turing Machines,” won the Bingham Fellowship for writers and was a runner-up for the PEN/Hemingway award for “a distinguished book of first fiction.”
At the morning ceremony, LTU will bestow its highest alumni honor, the Alumni Achievement Award, upon Daniel W. Johnson. He earned dual Bachelor of Science degrees from LTU in 1976, in physics, as well as mathematics and computer science. He is currently a consulting engineer at Northrop Grumman, where he received the company’s 2022 New Technology Award. He has developed advanced control systems, initiated research and development programs with universities, laboratories, and tech companies, and has published numerous research papers.
Also, at the afternoon ceremony, LTU will bestow the Alumni Achievement Award upon Steve Gamache, who earned a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from LTU in 1992. A 30-year employee of Lear Corp., Gamache started his career as an entry level engineer in Lear’s advanced engineering department, and worked in increasingly responsible positions until his recent promotion to vice president of engineering for Lear Forward. Gamache is the holder of two United States Patents and is active in the alumni chapter of LTU’s Phi Kappa Upsilon fraternity. He hs also helped establish a series of industry sponsored projects between Lear and LTU.
