SOUTHFIELD—Concrete is the world’s most-used construction material—its usage worldwide, ton for ton, is twice that of steel, wood, plastics, and aluminum combined. Modern civilization, from buildings to bridges, is made largely of concrete.
Now, Lawrence Technological University is adding a new degree that will teach students the science and engineering of concrete, as well as provide them with a firm foundation to manage the business of concrete.
LTU’s new degree is a Bachelor of Science in Concrete Technology and Management, combined with a minor in business administration. University officials say it’s the only such combined program in the nation.
LTU President Tarek M. Sobh said the new degree will provide technical and managerial leadership in sustainable, complex concrete projects, ranging from buildings to major civil engineering projects like roads and bridges. “Graduates of this program will have the skills needed to succeed in the multi-billion-dollar concrete industry,” Sobh said.
Added Nishantha Bandara, LTU associate professor of civil and architectural engineering: “This program will fill a critical need for the education and training of concrete industry professionals, who are in ever‐increasing demand within the concrete and construction industry.”
The new program is built on a partnership between Lawrence Technological University and the Michigan Concrete Association, which will provide funding for the program, student scholarships, and internships for program students.
Leaders of the Michigan Concrete Association and Lawrence Tech will gather for a ceremony celebrating the creation of the new program Friday, Oct. 13 at 1 p.m. The event will be held at LTU’s Nabil Grace Center for Innovative Materials Research.
The four-year program is comprised of 56 semester hours of education in concrete and construction technologies and engineering, 18 semester hours of business administration, 12 semester hours of applied mathematics, 11 semester hours of applied natural sciences, and 26 semester hours of general education and humanities, with an emphasis on leadership.
Lawrence Technological University is one of only 13 private, technological, comprehensive doctoral universities in the United States. Located in Southfield, Mich., LTU was founded in 1932 and offers more than 100 programs through its Colleges of Architecture and Design, Arts and Sciences, Business and Information Technology, Engineering, and Health Sciences, as well as Specs@LTU as part of its growing Center for Professional Development. PayScale lists Lawrence Tech among the nation’s top 11 percent of universities for alumni salaries. Forbes and The Wall Street Journal rank LTU among the nation’s top 10 percent. U.S. News and World Report list it in the top tier of the best Midwest colleges. Students benefit from small class sizes and a real-world, hands-on, “theory and practice” education with an emphasis on leaders
