Genna Skalski, who will graduate in May from Lawrence Technological University with a Bachelor of Science in Media Communication, won the Friends of Bill Burton Scholarship from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Foundation.

Skalski, who also earned a minor in technical and professional communication, was honored at the MAB’s Broadcast Excellence Awards ceremony March 4 at the Lansing Center.

The scholarship criteria include professional promise, creativity, leadership, entrepreneurial spirit, perseverance, and natural ability, along with academic performance.

During her time at LTU, Skalski worked as an intern at Yellow Flag Productions, a media production company housed on LTU’s campus. She worked as co-host, videographer, editor and writer for several Yellow Flag sports shows that aired on Fox Sports channels in the Midwest, and was a digital reporter for the Detroit Sports Media Association, where she covered the Detroit Red Wings, Tigers, Lions, and Pistons.

The award is named for Bill Burton, former president and COO of the Detroit Radio Advertising Group, who was responsible for an estimated $300 million in radio advertising sales over a 30-year career.

Skalski said Burton “is remembered for his love of broadcasting and the positive impact he left behind. I am extremely thankful to receive such an honor.”
