The April 27 presentation, held via videoconference due to the coronavirus pandemic, was funded under a grant from the state Department of Education’s Michigan College-University Partnership (MiCUP) STEM Bridge program.

The purpose of the $71,000 grant is to engage students at both HFC and Macomb Community College and provide them the opportunity to learn about opportunities at LTU.

The virtual workshop by Wisam Bukaita, adjunct professor of mathematics at LTU, was open to any HFC student who was interested in the topic of developing a creative research poster, a topic which was suggested by Janice Gilliland, dean of the School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at HFC. During the virtual workshop, Bukaita discussed potential ideas for projects and highlighted several poster examples created by Lawrence Tech students. Specifically, the HFC students also learned what kind of information is needed to make an effective poster, including a captivating title, a project objective, reliable statistical data, references, creativity, and a conclusion.

During the workshop, the HFC students were able to actively participate and engage in discussion with Professor Bukaita. By the end of the session, the students agreed that they benefited from the workshop and would now be able to create their own posters using the information they learned from the virtual workshop. Bukaita encouraged participants to send him their posters so he can provide feedback on improving the research posters.

The LTU MiCUP STEM Bridge Grant is a unique opportunity to engage local community college students and enhance the pipeline of the next generation of STEM leaders in Southeast Michigan. The virtual workshop provided HFC students the opportunity to expand their skill set and learn about the research efforts of faculty and students at Lawrence Tech. This important community engagement partnership provides access and resources to diverse student populations in community colleges. Learn more about the LTU MiCUP STEM Bridge grant.
