SOUTHFIELD—Lawrence Technological University’s Master of Architecture program, part of its College of Architecture and Design, has received a full 8-year accreditation renewal from the National Architectural Accrediting Board.
Dale Allen Gyure, chair of the LTU Department of Architecture, said the LTU program received NAAB’s full eight-year accreditation, valid through 2031, “and we’re very happy about that.” The LTU program has been accredited since 1997.
In the United States, most registration boards require a degree from an accredited professional degree program as a prerequisite for licensure. The National Architectural Accrediting Board, which is the sole agency authorized to accredit professional degree programs in architecture offered by institutions with U.S. regional accreditation, recognizes three types of degrees: the Bachelor of Architecture, the Master of Architecture, and the Doctor of Architecture. A program may be granted an 8-year term, an 8-year term with conditions, or a 2-year term of continuing accreditation, or a 3-year term of initial accreditation, depending on the extent of its conformance with established education standards.
Doctor of Architecture and Master of Architecture degree programs may require a non-accredited undergraduate degree in architecture for admission. However, the non-accredited degree is not, by itself, recognized as an accredited degree.
Gyure said that after the COVID-19 pandemic, NAAB changed its accreditation procedure from a comprehensive onsite review of all student work and all program materials, to an approach using virtual visits where the main aim is reviewing an institution’s self-assessment, measuring the quality and effectiveness of those self-assessment procedures.
The accreditation procedure this time involved a written report and online interviews with students, faculty, Gyure, College of Architecture and Design Dean Karl Daubmann, and then-acting LTU Provost James Jolly.
LTU earned full 8-year accreditation in each of the eight program criteria and six student criteria, with three areas singled out for distinction: career paths, professional practice, and technical knowledge.

Going forward, Gyure said the College of Architecture and Design is considering several additions to its curriculum, including a new class called building technology, which will give students the latest updates on new building materials, new architectural software, and new design and construction techniques.
LTU is one of only five accredited architectural programs in Michigan. The Department of Architecture currently has 449 students, 278 at the undergraduate level and 171 at the graduate level.
Besides bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architecture, the College of Architecture and Design offers Bachelor of Science programs in interior design, and product design; Bachelor of Fine Arts programs in game design and graphic design; an Associate of Applied Science in graphic design; and combined bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in architecture and civil engineering, architecture and business administration, and architecture and construction management.
