LTU master-level architecture students build pavilion for Detroit’s Bailey Park

July 17, 2025

SOUTHFIELD, July 17, 2025–Lawrence Technological University’s College of Architecture and Design (CoAD) announced its 2025 Master of Architecture Design Studio project in partnership with the Bailey Park Neighborhood Development Corp. A pavilion will be built in this east side Detroit park as an example of CoAD’s commitment to project-based and community-engaged learning.

More than 60 M.Arch students attend their summer course remotely until the final week of class when they meet in person for the first time to build their final project, which kicked off on Saturday, July 12, and will conclude on Saturday, July 19.

Led by professors Lee-Su Huang, associate professor of architecture; Liz Wardzinski, Ph.D., associate professor of practice; and Katherine Goldberg, adjunct faculty, this year’s project is a proposed pavilion platform for Detroit’s Bailey Park. In partnership with the Bailey Park Neighborhood Development Corp., a pavilion will be built on campus and transported to this Detroit park.

Said Lilian Crum, interim dean of the LTU College of Architecture and Design: “One of the remarkable aspects of this project is how, in just one week, students collaboratively apply their architectural skill sets to build a functional, unified structure.”

From the perspective of the Bailey Park Neighborhood Development Corp., it’s a boon for the Bailey Park community. Said Katrina Watkins, founder and CEO of Bailey Park Neighborhood Development Corp.: “Liz (Wardzinski) and her students reached out to our organization. We’re in a historical neighborhood. We were interested in the renderings or whatever they could bring to the table at that time, whatever concept would help improve the neighborhood. The students are building a platform that we are going to use for exercise because we’re in the park. It’ll be covered so that we can have some shade from the sun. We envision that it will become a permanent structure that, as we grow, we can expand upon their vision. I’m always amazed with the students and the concepts that they come up with. With the experience that we’ve had with them developing the stage, we’re just blown away with what they came up with and the creativity that they have.”
