SOUTHFIELD—The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics has named Lawrence Technological University as one of the winners of its Champions of Character Five-Star Institution Award.
Lawrence Tech received the award at the gold level, the highest of the three levels of the award.
Each year, the NAIA uses its Champions of Character scorecard to measure the pursuit of character-driven athletics at its 252 member institutions. Those institutions are measured on character training for athletes and coaches, conduct in competition, academic achievements, character recognition, and character promotion. Institutions earn points for having exceptional student-athlete grade point averages, and for having minimal to no ejections from athletic contests during the course of an academic year.
“We are proud that the conduct of our LTU athletes in competition and in the classroom has earned this prestigious award,” said LTU President Tarek M. Sobh. “It is a tribute to the work we do every day to ensure that our athletic programs fit properly in the framework of a quality education. Truly, our student-athletes are students first.”
Added LTU Athletic Director Mary Ann Meltzer: “LTU coaches and athletes work hard every day to embody the NAIA’s five core values of athletic competition—integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership. This award is recognition of those efforts that are an integral part of our athletic program.”
Lawrence Technological University is one of only 13 private, technological, comprehensive doctoral universities in the United States. Located in Southfield, Mich., LTU was founded in 1932 and offers more than 100 programs through its Colleges of Architecture and Design, Arts and Sciences, Business and Information Technology, Engineering, and Health Sciences, as well as Specs@LTU as part of its growing Center for Professional Development. U.S. News and World Report list it in the top tier of the best Midwest colleges. Students benefit from small class sizes and a real-world, hands-on, “theory and practice” education with an emphasis on leadership.
