LTU gets Bosch Community Fund, state grants for summer STEM camps

June 14, 2023

SOUTHFIELD–Lawrence Technological University has received a $25,015 grant from the Bosch Community Fund to support the Marburger STEM Center’s “Summer STEM Series” program for students entering seventh, eighth, and ninth grades.

The program also received a $19,873 grant from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity’s MiSTEM Network.

Both grants will support a program that aims to develop interest and positive attitudes among youth toward STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) with a target toward historically underserved and underrepresented populations. Four one-week, full-day STEM camps will be held for cohorts of 24 students from the Wayne-Westland, Allen Park and Riverview school districts. The students will work on projects including watershed management, water sampling, bacteria analysis, soil testing, horticulture and rainwater gardens. Activities will also include 3D printing, laser cutting, computer coding, operating drone aircraft, and robotics.

“The program will include problem-solving, team-based projects that will provide students with STEM skills while also building social skills,” said Jay Jessen, director of the Marburger STEM Center at LTU, the university’s hub for K-12 STEM outreach activities. “In addition to the unique hands-on learning experiences, the sessions are designed to be a lot of fun!”

LTU faculty, staff, and students will be able to provide the young students with access to classrooms, environmental and biology labs, rainwater gardens, and more.

“LTU’s vision is to develop future leaders in STEM, and this program represents the university’s commitment to that goal,” Jessen added.
