LTU chapter of National Academy of Inventors features local patent office leader

SOUTHFIELD, Mich.—A veteran official from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office will keynote a Wednesday, Nov. 5 “Lunch and Learn” meeting of the Lawrence Technological University chapter of the National Academy of Inventors.

Marilyn Nash, interim assistant regional director and regional outreach officer for the Midwest Elijah J. McCoy Regional Outreach Office of the USPTO, and a Lawrence Tech alumna, will deliver the keynote at the event, which is also the fall meeting of the LTU chapter.

In her post, Nash provides intellectual property resources and programming to innovators, stakeholders, and rights-holders throughout the USPTO’s nine-state Midwest region. Nash joined the USPTO in 2021 as a program analyst before being promoted to her current role in 2022. Earlier, she was a business opportunity specialist for the U.S. Small Business Administration, an industrial base specialist for the U.S. Army Tank and Automotive Command, a portfolio manager for the Defense Contract Management Agency, and a senior acquisition policy analyst for the Defense Logistics Agency. She earned a bachelor of science in industrial management degree from LTU and professional certification as an Innovation and Technology Commercialization Professional from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

The sponsor of the event is the intellectual property law firm Ward Law Office.

In addition to the keynote, an innovation and intellectual property panel discussion will feature LTU President Tarek Sobh; Nabil Grace, LTU senior vice president of research and economic development; Ward Law patent attorney Jake Ward; and inventor Barbara Lyons, winner of the LTU NAI Chapter’s first Inspired Inventor award.

Also, Hao Jiang, assistant professor of biomedical engineering in LTU’s College of Engineering and professor of natural sciences in LTU’s College of Arts and Sciences, will receive the chapter’s second Inspired Inventor award for his patented work in biotechnology.

The event will take place at the Marburger Auditorium, Room S100 of the LTU Science Building (building 7 at www.ltu.edu/map). Food will be available in the lobby of the auditorium at 11:30 a.m., with the program beginning at noon.

Use Your Cell Phone as a Document Camera in Zoom

  • Have your phone plugged in
  • Set up video stand phone holder

Log in and start your Zoom session with participants

From Phone

  • Start the Zoom session on your phone app (suggest setting your phone to “Do not disturb” since your phone screen will be seen in Zoom)
  • Type in the Meeting ID and Join
  • Do not use phone audio option to avoid feedback
  • Select “share content” and “screen” to share your cell phone’s screen in your Zoom session
  • Select “start broadcast” from Zoom app. The home screen of your cell phone is now being shared with your participants.

To use your cell phone as a makeshift document camera

  • Open (swipe to switch apps) and select the camera app on your phone
  • Start in photo mode and aim the camera at whatever materials you would like to share
  • This is where you will have to position what you want to share to get the best view – but you will see ‘how you are doing’ in the main Zoom session.
