LTU Announces the Departure of Football Coach Scott Merchant, names Oscar Olejniczak new Head Coach

February 17, 2025

SOUTHFIELD—After a transformative season leading Lawrence Technological University’s Blue Devils, Scott Merchant announces he will be stepping down as head coach effective immediately.

“We thank Coach Merchant for his hard work and contributions to Lawrence Technological University and the Blue Devils football program,” said Mary Ann Meltzer, director of athletics at LTU. “We are grateful for his leadership and commitment to both the athletic and academic success of our student-athletes and we wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

Effective immediately, Recruiting and Offensive Coordinator Oscar Olejniczak has been named as the new head coach. Olejniczak held assistant coaching jobs at Michigan State, Wayne State, and Campbell universities and also led successful high school teams in the Catholic League at Detroit U-D Jesuit and Royal Oak Shrine.

“Given his experience and success, we are excited to elevate Coach Oleniczak to the position of Head Coach. We are fortunate to provide a seamless transition for our current and future student- athletes given Coach Olejniczak’s background and familiarity with our program,” Meltzer commented.

LTU reintroduced football as an intercollegiate sport in 2017 after a 60-plus-year absence. The Blue Devils play in the Mid-States Football Association, a conference affiliated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Home games are played at the 2,200- seat Blue Devils Stadium at the intersection of Ten Mile Road and the Lodge Freeway on LTU’s Southfield campus.
