SOUTHFIELD—Lawrence Technological University has signed an agreement with the American University in Iraq-Baghdad that aims to establish both student exchanges and an LTU engineering program in Iraq.

The agreement was signed Wednesday during a visit of AUIB officials to LTU’s Southfield campus.

The “memorandum of understanding” seeks to explore, develop, and shape a framework for an LTU-affiliated College of Engineering at AUIB. Undergraduate students of this program who achieve a grade point average of 3.0 would gain automatic acceptance into LTU’s Master of Science and Ph.D. engineering programs.

The agreement also aims to create 2-plus-2-year programs to bachelor’s engineering degrees where students would spend time on both campuses, as well as a 2-plus-2o-plus-1-year program for an LTU engineering master’s degree.

As well as the new program, the agreement seeks to “facilitate institutional exchanges of bachelor and master students, teachers, and researchers for limited periods of time in the form of online seminars, workshops, etc. prior to the full agreement being in place.”

Finally, the agreement has the two universities working toward cooperation in training and research-and-development programs, as well as collaboration in providing technical advice to enterprises and conducting technology-transfer efforts.

LTU was represented in the talks by President Tarek M. Sobh and Provost Richard Heist. Visiting from AUIB were its president, Michael W. Mulnix, and Michael McClellan, counselor to the president.

“We are happy to be starting this relationship with AUIB,” Sobh said. “LTU is as always seeking to grow and expand its global presence, and to bring the unique advantages of our ‘Theory and Practice’ educational philosophy to more and more students around the world.”

LTU Provost Richard Heist said the university plans to “send a small team to visit AUIB in the fall of 2023 to begin the building process for the collaboration described in the agreement. During the ’23-’24 academic year, we will continue to assist AUIB in developing LTU-based engineering programs for delivery on their campus and, at the same time, work with them to create the administrative structure for the academic programs that will promote student transfer and exchange through 2+2 and 2+2+1 programs. As enrollment in these collaborative programs begins, planning will continue for the other cooperative engagements outlined in the agreement.”

And Mulnix added: “The faculty, staff and students at AUIB are very excited to enter into this agreement with Lawrence Technological University. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to LTU President Sobh and to LTU Provost Heist for taking time to meet with our delegation this past week and to move this collaboration forward.  It is my sincere belief that our joint effort will result in academic programs, including engineering and more, that will benefit students from both institutions.  We look forward to hosting the LTU delegation at AUIB this coming fall term.”

The American University of Iraq – Baghdad is a private, not-for-profit university established in 2018. It started its teaching activities in February 2021 with 260 students in three colleges: Arts and Sciences, International Studies, and Business. The campus has grown quickly with the addition of five more colleges (Pharmacy, Dentistry, Health Technologies, Nursing, and Law). It models itself on other regional American-style universities such as American University of Beirut and American University of Cairo. It does not currently offer engineering degrees.

Lawrence Technological University, www.ltu.edu, is one of only 13 private, technological, comprehensive doctoral universities in the United States. Located in Southfield, Mich., LTU was founded in 1932, and offers more than 100 programs through its Colleges of Architecture and Design, Arts and Sciences, Business and Information Technology, Engineering, and Health Sciences. PayScale lists Lawrence Tech among the nation’s top 11 percent of universities for alumni salaries. Forbes and The Wall Street Journal rank LTU among the nation’s top 10 percent. U.S. News and World Report lists it in the top tier of best in the Midwest colleges. Students benefit from small class sizes and a real-world, hands-on, “theory and practice” education with an emphasis on leadership. Activities on Lawrence Tech’s 107-acre campus include more than 60 student organizations and NAIA varsity sports.
