Lawrence Technological University (LTU) proudly highlighted the remarkable achievements of two undergraduate Computer Science students, Sonya Tran, a sophomore, and Logan Miller, a senior, at the 2025 Michigan Academy of Science, Arts & Letters (MASAL) Conference. Under the mentorship of Dr. Wisam Bukaita, both students presented their groundbreaking research at the virtual conference, offering an excellent opportunity for students, faculty, and researchers to engage in meaningful academic discussions across a wide range of scientific fields.
Sonya Tran’s research paper, “Leveraging Skeletal Fracture Detection: The Role of Computer Vision in Modern Healthcare,” explores the integration of machine learning and image processing techniques to detect skeletal fractures. Her work focuses on improving the accuracy and efficiency of analyzing X-ray and MRI scans, ultimately enhancing diagnostic processes and offering potential solutions for more reliable healthcare outcomes.
Logan Miller’s paper, “Ecoscan: A Plant Disease Detection Program,” examines the use of computer vision for detecting plant diseases. Through advanced image analysis, Logan’s project identifies early symptoms of plant diseases, allowing for preventative actions before significant damage occurs.
This research highlights how computer vision can be leveraged in agriculture to help preserve plant health and improve crop yields.
Both students showcased exceptional technical skills and the ability to tackle real-world challenges through interdisciplinary research. Their participation in the MASAL Conference was made possible with the support of Dr. Eric Martinson, Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. The financial and resource support provided by LTU allowed these students to present their research alongside nearly 100 researchers representing the diverse academic community in Michigan.
The invaluable support for undergraduate research provided by Dr. Patrick Nelson, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, played a pivotal role in offering the encouragement and resources needed for these students to showcase their work on such a prestigious academic platform. Their participation in the MASAL Conference gave Sonya and Logan the opportunity to gain valuable exposure, engage with fellow researchers, and receive constructive feedback to help refine their projects and contribute to advancements in their respective fields. Moving forward, Sonya and Logan’s next goal is to present their research achievements at the upcoming Research Day poster presentation event on April 25th. Their success highlights the collaborative academic environment at LTU, where faculty, administrators, and students work together to foster innovation and excellence in education.
A heartfelt thank you to Steven Kish, Systems Librarian at Lawrence Technological University Library, for providing invaluable support in facilitating the virtual attendance of the conference. His assistance in arranging access to the library study rooms allowed Sonya and Logan to participate seamlessly and contribute to the success of their research presentation.
Congratulations, Sonya and Logan, on your milestone achievements! Your remarkable research contributions are not only a testament to your hard work and dedication but will also open doors for you as you continue to advance in your academic and professional journeys. We are confident that your efforts will pave the way for you to graduate from LTU with even greater success and future opportunities. Keep up the great work!
