Lawrence Technological University Celebrates Transformative Success of MICUP Second-Year Program

August 20, 2025

Lawrence Technological University (LTU) proudly celebrated the second year of the Michigan College/University Partnership (MICUP) program on August 8, 2025, marking a transformative milestone in its mission to expand opportunities for community college students. Hosted by LTU’s College of Arts and Sciences, under the leadership of Dean Nelson, this year’s event highlighted remarkable growth, collaboration, and student achievement.

The 2025 MICUP program saw a 60% increase in participation compared to its inaugural year, welcoming students from Macomb Community College (MCC), Oakland Community College (OCC), and Henry Ford College (HFCC). These scholars brought energy, dedication, and vision to the program, embodying the promise of Michigan’s next generation of leaders.

The celebration was further strengthened by the steadfast support of the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO), represented by Joseph Baynesan, and the distinguished support of Dean Kenneth Williams (OCC), Dean Janice Gilliland (HFCC), and Dean Marie Pritchett (MCC). Their partnership underscores the critical role of collaboration in creating pathways from community colleges to four-year institutions and beyond.

LTU also recognized the invaluable contributions of Professor Jeffery Parent (OCC) and Professor Caroline Nissan (MCC), whose mentorship helped guide students through this life-changing experience. In addition, the dedicated LTU College of Arts and Sciences faculty mentors generously devoted their summer to working closely with students, offering guidance, resources, and hands-on opportunities that allowed participants to fully experience the four-year university environment.

Through their mentorship, students gained not only academic enrichment but also the skills, confidence, and preparation needed to thrive as future leaders in the workforce. For many, this experience served as a transformative first step into advanced studies and professional aspirations.

“This program continues to open doors for community college students to experience the rigor and excitement of university-level education,” said Dean Nelson. “We are building bridges that transform lives, strengthen communities, and prepare students for leadership in Michigan’s future workforce.”

The event also featured inspiring student-mentor collaborations, celebrated below:
