MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo.—Lawrence Technological University won the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division 3 national championship Tuesday, coming from behind to beat Grand Valley State University 4-2.
The win is the first ever national title for LTU hockey, and brings the Division 3 squad’s season record to a final mark of 29-5-2. LTU was seeded No. 1 in the tournament, Grand Valley No. 3.
The win, at USA Arena in the Centene Community Ice Center, is also the third national title for LTU athletics in the last 10 months. LTU is the reigning national champion in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics in men’s bowling and women’s lacrosse.
Trailing 1-0 after the first period, LTU erased that deficit in the second to forge ahead 3-1 on goals by junior Gavin Holmes, freshman Tommy Walsh and sophomore Benjamin De Haas 10 minutes and 9 seconds apart. Holmes tied it 1-1 on the power play when he scored off on a rebound shot by senior Zachary Rais at the 3:54 mark. Then just 34 seconds later, Walsh scored the go-ahead goal on another broken play when he capitalized on the rebound from freshman Josh Pedersen‘s shot. De Haas was credited with the game-winning goal at 14:03 on a wrister over the goalie’s right shoulder.
Lawrence Tech junior goaltender Timothy Young made 28 saves to move his record to 9-1-2. Graduate student Blayne Young scored an insurance goal with an empty-net with 38 seconds to preserve the victory.
Grand Valley goalie Bobby Masters kept the Lakers in the game with 25 stops.
Lawrence Tech beat the University of Missouri 3-2 in Monday’s semifinal to reach Tuesday’s championship game.
