Lawrence Tech to open state-of-the-art Industry 4.0 laboratory

January 24, 2023

SOUTHFIELD–The future of factories is Industry 4.0–the combination of the Internet of Things, advanced small sensors, high-speed internet and Big Data analysis that will make manufacturing faster, cleaner, more efficient and more environmentally friendly than ever before.

On Wednesday, Jan. 25, Lawrence Technological University will dedicate a new, advanced laboratory where students will learn all about Industry 4.0–and where they and their professors and industry partners will conduct groundbreaking research to advance the state of the art in manufacturing still further.

The million-dollar-plus laboratory is formally called the Rockwell Automation/McNaughton-McKay Electric Co. I4.0 Robotics and Industrial Automation Laboratory. Besides those companies, other sponsors of equipment in the lab include Kuka Robotics; DeepView, a Rochester company that has developed an intelligent camera inspection system; and Detect-It, an Oak Park startup developing novel artificial intelligence workflow and inspection systems.

“We believe this laboratory provides yet another unique advantage to Lawrence Tech engineering and computer science students, since this gives them a chance to work on state-of-the-art industrial automation hardware and software,” said LTU President Tarek M. Sobh. “LTU is the creative, innovative university of tomorrow–and our graduates will be well qualified to design and optimize the factories of tomorrow.”

The laboratory is equipped with industrial robots, an intelligent customizable moving assembly line, intelligent inspection technology, and associated software.

The ceremony is to begin at 11 a.m. Area political and business dignitaries are scheduled to attend, including representatives of Automation Alley, the Michigan Economic Development Corp., and the city of Southfield. The lab is located on the second floor of the Taubman Engineering, Architecture, and Life Sciences Complex, building 8 at https://www.ltu.edu/map. Ample free parking is available in nearby parking lots D and E.

Lawrence Technological University is one of only 13 private, technological, comprehensive doctoral universities in the United States. Located in Southfield, Mich., LTU was founded in 1932, and offers more than 100 programs through its Colleges of Architecture and Design, Arts and Sciences, Business and Information Technology, and Engineering. PayScale lists Lawrence Tech among the nation’s top 11 percent of universities for alumni salaries. Forbes and The Wall Street Journal rank LTU among the nation’s top 10 percent. U.S. News and World Report lists it in the top tier of best in the Midwest colleges. Students benefit from small class sizes and a real-world, hands-on, “theory and practice” education with an emphasis on leadership. Activities on Lawrence Tech’s 107-acre campus include more than 60 student organizations and NAIA varsity sports.
