SOUTHFIELD—A nationally recognized scholar and educator has been named the dean of the Lawrence Technological University College of Arts and Sciences.
Patrick Nelson served as chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science within the College of Arts and Sciences since 2016, and had been serving as the college’s acting dean since January 2023.
Prior to that, Nelson was CoAS associate dean for research. He joined the LTU faculty in 2010 as a professor of mathematics.
Nelson is a mathematical biologist whose area of expertise is in the mathematical modeling of infectious diseases and diabetes. He has served on the board of directors for the Society of Mathematical Biology and as associate editor for the Journal of Diabetes and Metabolism and the academic journal Mathematical Biosciences and Engineering.
Nelson earned his Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the University of Washington in 1998 and held postdoctoral appointments at the University of Minnesota and Duke University. In 2000, he joined the faculty of the mathematics department at the University of Michigan, where he received the Burroughs Wellcome Career Award for his work on modeling HIV. In 2008, Nelson moved to the U-M medical school’s Center for Computational Biology and Medicine. This medical connection allowed his HIV research to progress, integrating laboratory experiments with mathematical modeling.
Nelson has authored or co-authored over 50 papers in peer-reviewed academic publications with over 5,600 citations, and has been principal or co-principal investigator on National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation grants totaling over $2.5 million.
Nelson says he’s looking forward to the challenge of his new role. He said his aims are to “help the college fall in line with the mission and vision of the university” being charted by LTU President Tarek Sobh, and to “make this college, make all of our programs, among the best of the region—the place where every kid wants to go, their first choice.”
LTU’s College of Arts and Sciences offers more than 35 programs across three departments: Humanities, Social Sciences, and Communication; Mathematics and Computer Science; and Natural Sciences. For more information, visit https://www.ltu.edu/arts-sciences/index ,
