Bukaita
Wisam
Assistant Professor of Practice

Dr. Bukaita earned his BS, MS, and Ph.D. degrees in civil engineering from Baghdad University before coming to the US. He also graduated with an MSc degree in Civil Engineering from LTU to better align his education and skills with the needs of the US job market.

He was recruited by LTU’s Academic Achievement Center as a mathematics and civil engineering tutor. The Mathematics and Computer Sciences Department at Lawrence Tech hired him as a teacher assistant in 2012 and an adjunct professor in 2013. He was hired as an Assistant Professor of Practice in the fall 2021 and is responsible for managing the Data Science program. Dr. Bukaita teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in the Colleges of Engineering and Architecture in addition to his full-time position as Math and Computer Science instructor in the College of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Bukaita has a keen interest in the mathematics and analytics used to evaluate and design structures. For his master’s thesis, entitled “Development of Analytical Design Procedures for Tapered Columns,” his research included significant amounts of mathematics and analysis. The rest of the research focused on modifications to the AISC (American Institute of Steel Construction) design equations for column buckling considering residual stresses that develop from the fabrication procedure.

He also works as a consultant and subject matter expert for LearningMate, a technology company offering domain expertise in teaching and learning solutions, to help develop math course materials, and textbook publishers, including Pearson, Cengage, Elsevier, and Wiley, to produce quality print and digital material.

Dr. Bukaita believes that “mathematics is the scientists’ language, and it is the basis of all science and engineering concepts and theories. Whoever is capable of using this language will find it easy to deal with any level of education in any other discipline.”

Dr. Bukaita invites students from different disciplines to work with him on research projects that will help them transform their book learning into discovery and creativity.
