Dr. Valentina Tobos was born in Bucharest, Romania, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in physics. Following graduation, she taught middle- and high-school physics and prepared students for Physics Olympiads.
She moved to Michigan for graduate work and earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Experimental Solid-State Physics from Western Michigan University. Her field of study is high-temperature superconductors and her research work was in the Experimental Condensed Matter group led by Dr. L.M. Paulius.
Dr. Tobos joined Lawrence Technological University in 2001 and she has been involved ever since with introductory and advanced physics courses, science education, and educational technology. She received LTU’s Mary E. and Richard E. Marburger Faculty Member of the Year Award in 2006 and was part of the physics faculty that were recognized in 2022 with the Hsu Family Distinguished Award in Creativity. Dr. Tobos takes an active role in the American Physical Society programing of “community of transformation in physics enacting strategies to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion” and has held multiple leadership roles on the LTU campus and in the science education community through the Metropolitan Detroit Science Teachers Association.
Dr. Tobos enjoys walking, biking, and learning about the world and its peoples through reading and traveling.
