Dr. Valentina Tobos was born in Bucharest, Romania, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in physics. Following graduation, she taught middle- and high-school physics and prepared students for physics Olympiads.
She received a scholarship and moved to Michigan for graduate work and earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Experimental Solid State Physics from Western Michigan University in 2001. Her field of study is high-temperature superconductors and her research work was under the supervision of Dr. L.M. Paulius.
Dr. Tobos joined Lawrence Technological University in 2001 and she has been involved ever since with both introductory and advanced physics classes, science education and educational technology programs. She received LTU’s Mary E. and Richard E. Marburger Faculty Member of the Year Award in 2006 and was part of the physics faculty group that were awarded the 2022 Hsu Family Distinguished Award in Creativity. Dr. Tobos takes an active role in the American Physical Society programing of “community of transformation in physics enacting strategies to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion” and has held multiple leadership roles on the LTU campus and in the science education community through the Metropolitan Detroit Science Teachers Association.
