Dr. Mary Schutten is a professor of kinesiology and the founding Dean of the College of Health Sciences with substantive experience in higher education administration.  In her academic leadership roles that include both private and public universities, Dr. Schutten has built transfer pipelines, overseen the expansion of partnerships and campus programs in the health professions, collaboratively built shared visions and missions, and advanced equity and inclusion. As Dean of Health and Human Sciences at San Jose State University, she expanded programs to include the Doctor of Nursing Practice as well as nurse practitioner, Doctor of Audiology, and developed programs so that each student participated in a community experience all while promoting the college’s wellness and social justice mission. Her leadership focus on student success, access and equity, and technical and applied learning to impact the health of the region mirrors LTU’s own goals. Serving as the Founding Dean of the College of Health Sciences means partnering across the region to grow the college and develop innovative and agile leaders through a student-centric learning environment and applied research embracing theory, technology, and practice.

Dr. Schutten has served in the following roles: Faculty, Dean, Associate Dean, Department Chair, and Executive Vice President and Provost. Beyond her administrative experiences, she has considerable expertise in student recruitment and retention, curriculum development, cross-college collaboration, and fostering community partnerships. Her dedication to supporting staff, students, and faculty has not gone unnoticed, earning her national recognition as an outstanding student mentor and accolades as outstanding Health Education faculty. Additionally, she was honored as an outstanding alumna in the School of Public Health at Indiana University.

Dr. Schutten received a bachelor’s degree and teaching credentials in mathematics, physical education, and German from Calvin University. She earned a master’s degree in exercise science from California State University Long Beach, and a doctorate in physical education, with an emphasis on motor control with minors in health education and statistics, from Indiana University.

Use Your Cell Phone as a Document Camera in Zoom

  • What you will need to have and do
  • Download the mobile Zoom app (either App Store or Google Play)
  • Have your phone plugged in
  • Set up video stand phone holder

From Computer

Log in and start your Zoom session with participants

From Phone

  • Start the Zoom session on your phone app (suggest setting your phone to “Do not disturb” since your phone screen will be seen in Zoom)
  • Type in the Meeting ID and Join
  • Do not use phone audio option to avoid feedback
  • Select “share content” and “screen” to share your cell phone’s screen in your Zoom session
  • Select “start broadcast” from Zoom app. The home screen of your cell phone is now being shared with your participants.

To use your cell phone as a makeshift document camera

  • Open (swipe to switch apps) and select the camera app on your phone
  • Start in photo mode and aim the camera at whatever materials you would like to share
  • This is where you will have to position what you want to share to get the best view – but you will see ‘how you are doing’ in the main Zoom session.
