Shawn
Gasseling
Student Success Advisor

Shawn Gasseling is a student success advisor for the College of Business and Information Technology where he assists both undergraduate and graduate students in understanding degree requirements & policies, planning for timely graduation, and exploring both academic and personal goal setting. Shawn recognizes the profound impact that individual situations and circumstances can have on a student’s academic journey. In his advising, he believes that tailored responses, grounded in an understanding of each student’s unique background and identity, are crucial for fostering growth and achievement. He always strives to create a non-judgmental space where students can openly reflect on their challenges and goals, empowering them to take ownership of their academic and career paths.

Before his recent move to the Metro Detroit area in August 2023, Shawn previously worked as an academic advisor in another business program – The Kelley School of Business at Indiana University – for three and half years. There, he assisted with study abroad experiences, training programs, media presentations, and diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. While the fast-pace of a Big 10 School prepared him well as an advisor, he’s excited to work more closely with the students of LTU where it’ll be possible to foster and maintain a relationship with his new caseload.

Prior to his time working in student affairs, Shawn taught French and completed his MA in French Linguistics at Indiana University, as well. His love of education, language, and learning saw his research focus on Old Occitan texts, Quebecois French, and sociophonetics. The skills he learned in pedagogy, academic coaching, and working with students formed the solid foundation upon which he’s built his advising philosophy.
