Professional Background

Dr. Alaa El-Sharkawy is a dedicated educator, researcher, and automotive engineer with over 35 years of experience in thermal management, vehicle electrification, and materials engineering. As an Adjunct Professor at Lawrence Technological University (LTU) in Michigan, he has developed and teaches graduate-level courses such as High Voltage Battery Design, Thermal Management of Electric Vehicles, and Thermal Protection of Automotive Components, and has also spearheaded the development of LTU’s electrification program. His academic work is focused on bridging the gap between engineering education, industry needs, and societal challenges.

Before transitioning to academia, Dr. El-Sharkawy served at Stellantis (formerly Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) as Global Manager and Technical Fellow, where he led the development of thermal systems across various vehicle platforms. His pioneering work includes the creation of thermal degradation models and predictive tools such as Time-Temperature Analysis (TTA) and Virtual Time-Temperature Analysis (VTTA), which are used to predict material and component lifespan.

Dr. El-Sharkawy holds a Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from Wayne State University, as well as a B.Sc. from Alexandria University. He is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in Michigan and a certified DFSS Black Belt. Over the course of his career, he has authored and presented over 50 technical papers, contributing to innovation and sustainability in the automotive industry.

Industry Contributions and Recognition
Dr. El-Sharkawy has trained over 5,000 engineers worldwide on topics such as battery aging, thermal management, and materials durability. His work has earned him numerous awards, including the Stellantis Corporate Teaching Award and the General Motors Special Achievement Award for his outstanding technical leadership and innovation.
