Walter
Dean
Professor Emeritus of Chemistry

Dr. Walter Dean joined the LTU faculty in the fall of 1983 and has taught courses in general, inorganic, analytical, and physical chemistry.  He received a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, after which he studied synthetic and structural organometallic chemistry at the University of Wisconsin with Paul Treichel, receiving the Ph. D. degree in 1972.  Following postdoctoral studies with W. A. G. Graham at the University of Alberta, Canada, he taught at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia before coming to Detroit as a Research Chemist with Ethyl Corporation and later joining LTU.  In addition to teaching, he has been active in developing and modernizing the General Chemistry laboratory program and initiating the University’s academic assessment program.

Dr. Dean retired in 2011, with the distinction of Professor Emeritus.  Since then he has remained part of the LTU community, teaching as an adjunct professor and maintaining a research program.  His current research interests include the synthesis and structures of organometallic compounds of platinum and palladium formed by oxidative addition reactions.  He is a member of the American Chemical Society and its Organometallic Subdivision, and of Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi.

Off campus, Dr. Dean enjoys playing with several local community bands and orchestras, traveling with his wife, and visiting his daughter and two granddaughters.
