Professional Background

Lillian Hilla is an architect, historic preservationist, and designer who operates at the intersection of architecture and architectural history.

She is presently a Project Architect and Architectural Historian at Kraemer Design Group, a Detroit based architecture firm specializing in the rehabilitation and reuse of historic buildings. Lillian is a graduate of both the University of Michigan and the University of Pennsylvania. As a dual degree graduate of the Master of Architecture and Master of Science in Historic Preservation programs at the University of Pennsylvania, Lillian was awarded both the Walter Laird Award and the Samuel K. Schneidman Award for continued demonstrated excellence. Lillian dedicated her joint master’s thesis to the history and historiography of American suburbia.

Lillian is engaged in educational efforts dedicated to furthering the fields of historic preservation and architecture. She volunteers as a Penn alumni interviewer to inform prospective college students about the field and has spoken at such events as the Michigan Historic Preservation Network and the Association for Preservation Technology annual conferences regarding the present and future of the discipline.
