Professor Emerita

Professor Emerita Marilyn Rands, has been a formidable presence in the Department of Natural Sciences at Lawrence Technological University. With over 45 years of teaching experience at the university, she retired in 2021.  Overall, her teaching of physics and science education spans more than 55 years. Specializing in nuclear physics, Prof. Rands developed upper-level courses in the subject, among other development of curricula.

As the long-time director of the Master of Science in Education (MSE) program, she guided over 90 candidates as a capstone advisor.

Throughout her career, she played a pivotal role in shaping and enhancing the physics curriculum, not only for undergraduate physics majors but also for service courses and science teacher training programs.

Emerita Marilyn Rands was an early advocate for modern teaching methods and pedagogical strategies. She helped transform the culture of the department by sharing her research in physics education and contemporary teaching methods at both state and national conferences.

Her unwavering dedication to teaching has left a lasting impact on both faculty and students, enriching the academic community at Lawrence Technological University.  Externally, Marilyn Rands was recognized with the 2000 Metropolitan Detroit Science Teaching Association (MDSTA) Outstanding Science Educator Award and the 2017 MDSTA Ellen Daniel Jones Distinguished Service Award.

In addition to her academic accomplishments, Prof. Emerita Marilyn Rands is an avid reader and a passionate traveler, constantly seeking new experiences and learning opportunities around the world.

Use Your Cell Phone as a Document Camera in Zoom

  • What you will need to have and do
  • Download the mobile Zoom app (either App Store or Google Play)
  • Have your phone plugged in
  • Set up video stand phone holder

From Computer

Log in and start your Zoom session with participants

From Phone

  • Start the Zoom session on your phone app (suggest setting your phone to “Do not disturb” since your phone screen will be seen in Zoom)
  • Type in the Meeting ID and Join
  • Do not use phone audio option to avoid feedback
  • Select “share content” and “screen” to share your cell phone’s screen in your Zoom session
  • Select “start broadcast” from Zoom app. The home screen of your cell phone is now being shared with your participants.

To use your cell phone as a makeshift document camera

  • Open (swipe to switch apps) and select the camera app on your phone
  • Start in photo mode and aim the camera at whatever materials you would like to share
  • This is where you will have to position what you want to share to get the best view – but you will see ‘how you are doing’ in the main Zoom session.
