IDEASINTERDISCIPLINARY DESIGN AND ENTREPRENEURIAL APPLICATION SEQUENCE

Curriculum

IDEAS is woven into many of the engineering programs:

Freshman Experience

ltu

EGE1001 (Fundamentals of Engineering Design Project) is an active and engaging course that demonstrates the many aspects of engineering and the engineer's role in society through real world needs. This course introduces the student to basic engineering concepts and the various engineering disciplines through design and project work. The course also exposes the student to important engineering tools, methods, and processes. It also lays the groundwork for entrepreneurial/professional skill-sets that are needed by all engineers for effective communication of technical concepts while working in a team setting.

Core concepts include:

  • Engineering Design Process
  • Teamwork
  • Communication
  • Self-Awareness and Ethics
  • Critical Thinking

Sophomore Experience

In EGE2123 (Entrepreneurial Engineering Design Studio) , the course builds upon skills learned in EGE1001. Solutions are created through team-based projects. Students utilize engineering tools and skills, identify opportunities, ideate, perform value analyses, and engage with an actual customer.

The course is taught in a studio format. Hands-on learning is emphasized while content is delivered progressively, as needed, throughout a systematic engineering design process. Our program has been recognized as an exemplar by KEEN as showcased in KEEN'zine .

Junior Year Experience

EGE3022 (Leadership and Professional Development) is an active and engaging course that introduces leadership skills, thoughtfully explores professional ethics and consequences of decision making on the future of engineering, explores teamwork, and allows demonstration of professional development tools. This course builds upon the practices and mindset developed in EGE 1001 and EGE 2123 (or equivalent). Students are better prepared for the senior capstone experience as well as a profession in engineering and/or technology. It also contributes to the entrepreneurial/professional skill-sets all engineers need to possess so they can effectively complete projects (and solve problems) while working in a team setting. Leadership and Professional Development (EGE 3022)

Project based Entrepreneurial Minded Learning (EML) is technical instruction adapted to promote and encourage curiosity, discovery, developing insight, creating value, amd capitalizing on the experiential path. LTU distinguishes its graduates by providing excellent technical skills curriculum combined with 'entrepreneurial mindset' that cultivates curiosity, connected, and creating value. EML content is Discipline Specific and allows students to develop Discipline Specific Skills and Techniques .

Senior Year Experience

ltu

As seniors, students implement Full Depth and Breadth of Engineering Tools and Processes by working on Conceptual or Real World Design Projects . Projects incorporate a Business Case and Economic Viability .
