Dean’s Letter

Welcome to this edition of our college’s e-newsletter. It was an exciting fall ’24 semester, with CoAD taking the lead during Detroit’s heralded Month of Design. With our partner Bedrock, CoAD designed and built the unique educational and exhibit space at 1001 Woodward for our opening exploration into the Future of Construction and our symposium, sponsored by Gensler, on mass timber. You’ll read more about mass timber in this edition.

As we educate future generations of architects and designers, our college has designed innovative academic programs that we’re planning to launch in summer ’25, one of which you’ll read about below.

Coming up this semester is our signature ShowLTU CoAD, where we showcase our amazing students’ creativity and application of emerging technologies like generative AI, 3D modeling, and visualization tools. I heartily invite you to join us on May 8th.

Destination Rome!

Again, this year, CoAD students will have a unique study abroad opportunity in the Eternal City. From March 7th through the 15th, Sara Codarin, Ph.D., and I will accompany our students as they experience the city’s urban, architectural, artistic, political, and cultural elements: Ancient Roman sites, Baroque churches, Italian Rationalist government buildings, contemporary Italian buildings, and a range of art and sculpture. The students will utilize generative AI to engage with the city, reimagining its history and their experiences through technology.

We’re excited to introduce a new mobility concentration in our Product Design program. Here in the Motor City, LTU is doing its part to upskill our students in all modes of transport. I hope you’ll read on for the conversation with Professor Justin Famularo and meet our new director of interior design, Sophie Yan.

On behalf of our faculty, staff, and students, I invite you to engage with CoAD as we reimagine the future of architecture and design.
