Participatory Co-Design

Credit Hours:

3

This class will introduce students to the tools and processes of Participatory Co-Design. Co-Design can be defined as “a deep commitment to relationship-building, flexibility, mutual learning, and accountability to community.” In this course, students will be exposed to various engagement and information-gathering tools such as community surveys, participatory mapping, in-place interviews, planned street presences, and design charettes. Case study research will focus upon diverse practices such as the Dotte Agency, And Also Too, bcWORKSHOP, Latent Design, and Public Design Bureau. The class will partner with a local non-profit to gather information, assess user needs, and collaboratively develop a small design proposal.
