To the Campus Community,

Welcome back for the Fall 2022 semester!  We are excited to see you here on LTU's campus, and offer you best wishes for a productive and safe semester.

Over approximately the past 2.5 years, Lawrence Tech has adopted a cautious, reasoned, and flexible response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The University has been diligent in following federal, state and local guidance while continuing to deliver a world class education.  As we prepare for the Fall 2022 semester, and a return to full campus operations, we know that we are still dealing with COVID but also much closer to our lifestyles prior to March of 2020.

At this time, the following guidelines and protocols will be in place for our students entering the Fall semester:

1. Students who test positive for COVID-19 must report their positive test result to the University, and provide a copy of their positive test result. Reporting is completed online at  COVID Positive Report .
2. Students who are COVID positive will need to complete a five-day quarantine from their positive test date. Upon return to campus, the student is required to mask for an additional five days. Residential students quarantining on-campus can request a meal kit, which will provide food for five days. 
3. Professors will receive an email from Student Affairs confirming positive tests of their students.
4. Students needing a COVID test are encouraged to contact their medical provider and/or visit one of the many urgent cares in Southfield.
5. Weekly testing for non-vaccinated residential and/or student-athletes is no longer required.
6. There are no quarantine requirements for a student exposed to someone who has recently tested positive for COVID-19.

Dear Students,

I hope this message finds you safe and well.  As we prepare for the start of classes on January 10, 2022, we would like to update you on COVID-19 protocols for the start of the semester. 

In Person Instruction

First and foremost, instruction will be in person, however, students who are in a university directed quarantine and/or received a red screen from GoCanvas will be able to join their course via a zoom link.

GoCanvas

It is very important that students complete their daily health screen on GoCanvas. If you have tested positive for COVID-19, a Student Affairs staff member will be in touch with you. If you received a red screen, but have not tested positive for COVID-19, follow the directive to stay off-campus or in your residential room. If you are awaiting a test result and have symptoms, you must remain off campus or in your residential space.

Quarantines

Following recent guidance from the Oakland County Health Department, we will continue a 10 day quarantine for those who test positive for COVID-19. This applies to those who test positive but are asymptomatic as well.

Masks

Masks must be worn at all times while inside University spaces. Exceptions are while dining in the Café, and/or inside one’s space in a University Housing space.

COVID Vaccinations and Booster Shots

The Oakland County Health Department will administer COVID booster shots, and/or a first time COVID vaccination on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. inside the lobby of East Housing. If you ae interested in receiving a vaccination, please register at this link:   https://forms.gle/bTssyVS5PBDQXSr47 .

Over the past 18 months, Lawrence Tech has adopted a cautious, reasoned and flexible response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The University has been diligent in following federal, state and local guidance while continuing to deliver a world-class education. As we prepare for the Fall 2021 semester and a return to full campus operations, we know that we all must continue to be diligent. We also know this is a constantly evolving situation and we will continue to monitor and modify our guidelines and protocols as necessary. Our guidelines and protocols follow and mirror the guidance and directives from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), and the Oakland County Health Division (OCHD). As these agencies evolve their guidelines and directives, LTU will follow suit.

Accordingly, as of now, and following these above agencies' current directives, the following guidelines and protocols will be in place for our students, faculty and staff during the fall semester:

• Face Coverings/Masks: Given the above agencies' current directives and guidance, and since Oakland County's current COVID-19 transmission rate falls into the "Substantial Transmission" category, face coverings or masks are required indoors for all individuals (vaccinated or unvaccinated). If the above health agencies change their guidelines and directives, LTU will adopt these. Individuals who are not yet fully vaccinated are expected and very strongly encouraged to wear masks at all times. The University is fully supportive of individuals, regardless of vaccination status, who choose to wear face coverings/masks. Housing and Athletic students will receive further instruction on additional masking protocols from the Athletic or Housing Departments.
• Social Distancing: At this time, social distancing is not required. However, food and drink will not be allowed in classrooms.
• Vaccinations: At this time, only residential students and athletes are required to provide evidence of vaccination. These student groups will receive further instruction on additional COVID-19 protocols from the Athletic or Housing departments. Although other groups are currently not required to be vaccinated, all students are encouraged to  submit their vaccination records . This will help the University community during COVID-19 tracing scenarios by omitting the tracing of individuals who have been vaccinated. In addition, there will be further opportunities for students, staff and faculty to be vaccinated on campus. On-site vaccinations will take place on August 6 and August 19. You will be able to choose to receive the Johnson & Johnson or Pfizer vaccine. Please keep in mind that those receiving the Pfizer vaccine will need to return 3 weeks later for their second shot, which will also be offered at LTU. If you are interested in taking advantage of this, please email  studean@ltu.edu .
• Daily Health Screening: The Daily Screening through GoCanvas will still be required for everyone in the Fall semester. For visitors/vendors, they can complete the paper version of the Daily Screening and forward it to the LTU Business Services department.
• Inside Gatherings: Internal gatherings should be limited to our own internal events (recruitment events/welcome back events/etc.) and will be consistent with all health agencies' guidelines. We will continue to deny any external groups from holding events here for the fall semester to minimize any potential risk.
• Fall Classes: LTU will fully return to offering classes in person for both undergraduate and graduate students at the same rate we offered them prior to the pandemic.
• Cleaning/Sanitizing: Facilities will continue to follow our upgraded cleaning protocols, as well as having sanitizers available in the classrooms. If anyone needs any product, please contact Campus Facilities. The hand sanitizing stations in the hallways will continue to be maintained as well, and we encourage everyone to use them as much as possible, along with washing hands regularly.
• Travel: Business travel within the U.S. is allowed. At this time, Business travel outside the U.S. is not encouraged; however, is allowed, except for those countries listed as Level 4 by the CDC on the travel risk list.

We continue to be very impressed with your dedication, resilience and creativity throughout what has been the most difficult academic year for higher education in recent history. We would also like to congratulate and thank all of you for concluding the past academic year successfully with great outcomes.

As you are aware, the State of Michigan continues to experience a very significant surge in COVID-19 cases.  The impact has been significant on many in our community. With safety as our top goal, the University is announcing the following:

1. Spring 2021 classes will remain online for the remainder of the semester. If you have a laboratory or studio class, the Dean of your College and/or the class instructor will communicate with you regarding the delivery modality for these courses, which might be online, hybrid, or in-person for the remaining part of the semester.

2. All athletic competitions and practices are canceled for the Spring 2021 semester.   

3. Residence Halls and Dining Services will remain open through May 8, 2021, and residential students are allowed to continue living on campus.

4. On Friday, April 16, 2021, the Oakland County Health Department will vaccinate students on campus.  If you have not already done so, please register for your vaccine at:   COVID - 19 Vaccination Registration   by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13, 2021.

Dear Students,

I hope all is well with you.

As the Spring semester nears completion, our University is taking the following steps to provide members of our community with additional opportunities to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by the Fall 2021 semester and to ensure a safe return to campus by the Fall 2021 semester:

1. We are excited to announce that Lawrence Technological University is receiving a limited supply of the Johnson & Johnson one-shot vaccine. Students who currently reside on campus and intending to register for classes this Fall will receive first priority for a vaccine. Vaccinations are currently planned to be given on Friday, April 16, 2021. If you are interested in receiving this vaccination, please complete the  COVID-19 Vaccination Survey  by Monday, April 12. Selected students will receive scheduling information on Tuesday, April 13, via their LTU email.

2. All students living on campus in residence halls for the Fall 2021 semester must be vaccinated. Verification of your vaccination must be provided to the Residence Life office two weeks prior to your move-in. Exceptions will be made for students who seek a religious or medical exemption. 

3. All student-athletes, whether they live on campus or not, will be required to be vaccinated by August 1, 2021 in order to participate in athletics during the 2021-22 school year.

4. If you have not done so already, please register online via the  State of Michigan COVID-19 Vaccinations  site for additional vaccination opportunities. 

We will continue to update the campus community should there be more opportunities for LTU to provide on or off-campus vaccinations. In the meantime, thank you for all your help with keeping the campus safe, and best of luck in your final exams. Let's finish the semester strong!

Dear Students, 

Our goal this spring semester was to provide our students with as much of a traditional university experience as possible during these unusual times while maintaining safe practices. Although there are many encouraging signs in the battle against COVID, and as millions of Americans receive the coronavirus vaccine, we are starting to see a light at the end of the long tunnel of the pandemic, there is now, unfortunately, a substantial increase in COVID-19 positivity rates in the State of Michigan and in the Lawrence Tech community.

As a result, beginning on Tuesday, March 30, all classes will be delivered virtually through Monday, April 12, 2021. All NAIA athletic practices and competitions are cancelled through April 12, 2021. In-person instruction will resume on Tuesday, April 13, 2021.   

I understand this is another unwelcome development in a long and difficult year, but your wholehearted cooperation and observance of appropriate precautions is critically important in ensuring that we limit the spread of the virus and provide our students with the best opportunity for a positive on-campus experience for the remainder of the spring semester.

On a final note, beginning Monday, April 5, all Michiganders age 16 and up are eligible to receive a COVID vaccine. Please be sure to set time aside and register for your vaccination appointment. You can “Save Your Spot” at  https://oaklandcountyvaccine. com/ .

Dear Students, Faculty, Staff, Alumni, Parents, and Friends –

Happy new year and best wishes for a productive and successful spring semester. We’re glad to welcome our students back!

As you may have read elsewhere, Lawrence Tech is providing face-to-face instruction this semester as much as possible, augmented, when necessary, with hybrid and e-learning courses. Students have overwhelmingly told us that face-to-face learning is the method they prefer. A Lawrence Tech education, with its remarkable return on investment, is still very much worth the effort, even during the pandemic’s disruptions.

We’re very confident in offering face-to-face learning under appropriate conditions because of the splendid diligence our campus community showed in following health and safety protocols during the fall semester. However, the pandemic is not over. We need to continue wearing masks, practicing social distancing, limiting social activity, washing hands frequently, disinfecting our environments, and other safety procedures. Very importantly, these measures need to be followed not only on campus but off campus as well as at events, jobs, gatherings of friends and family, at restaurants, while shopping, and more.

We’re all very interested in the rollout plans for the COVID-19 vaccine. This phased rollout likely will take a number of months to complete. First priority are front line healthcare workers, emergency personnel, and the elderly. It ultimately fans out to all of us as a larger supply of vaccines become available. Please watch the news and contact your local health department or your personal healthcare provider when it is appropriate for you to make an appointment for your vaccine inoculation. I hope that you find yourself well as we approach the halfway mark of the academic year. This year has presented the Lawrence Tech community with many challenges, yet we have persevered and will continue to do so. Placing high priority on health and wellness, I have made a decision to delay the start date of the spring 2021 semester.

The spring semester will begin on Tuesday, January 19, immediately following Martin Luther King Day. After consultation with numerous members of the LTU community, I have also decided to cancel the mid-semester break. These changes will help to ensure that we are healthy before returning to campus and limit potential exposure to illness. The semester end date of May 7, 2021, will remain as previously scheduled.

Universities in Michigan and throughout the nation have taken similar steps to ensure the safety and well-being of their communities. At LTU, we will continue to implement appropriate safety measures and prepare for a successful spring semester. More information will be provided to you very soon. I sincerely thank you for your understanding and continued commitment to Lawrence Tech.

Dear Students,

Earlier tonight, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer updated the State of Michigan on the latest restrictions and mitigations related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a result, Lawrence Technological University will make the following switches immediately, as of today (November 15, 2020) through the end of the Fall semester (December 17, 2020):

• All in-person, face-to-face instruction, including labs. and senior projects, is being replaced by online instruction   through the end of the semester, December 17, 2020 .  Students should communicate with their college Dean if they need further details regarding course instruction.
• All courses currently delivered online will continue as scheduled.
• Students residing in University Housing units will receive further updates tomorrow from the Dean of Students office.
• All NAIA athletic practices and competitions are cancelled through November 29, 2020. Student-athletes will receive communications on the resumption of practices and competitions from the Director of Athletics later this week.

Dear Students,

Our goal this semester was to provide as much of a traditional university experience as possible during these unusual times while maintaining safe practices. We have consistently monitored the virus in our community and adjusted our practices as deemed appropriate. It has recently become apparent that there is an increase in COVID-19 positivity rates in the State of Michigan and in the Lawrence Tech community, leading us to make an adjustment to our semester schedule with the goal of mitigating the spread of COVID-19.

Beginning on Monday, November 16, 2020, all classes will be delivered virtually for the remainder of the Fall 2020 semester. Laboratory courses and senior projects in the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business and Information Technology, and the College of Engineering will be an exception and will remain on-campus through November 24, 2020. The College of Architecture and Design will identify the classes that will remain on-campus through November 24, 2020 and communicate these exceptions directly to its students.

Residence halls and dining services will remain open through their originally scheduled and communicated dates. These actions will hopefully allow us to do our part as Blue Devils and help slow the spread in our community.

IMPORTANT REQUIREMENTS - RETURNING TO CAMPUS 

I am writing about an important requirement when you are on campus this semester. Starting Wednesday, August 12, 2020 ,  all students must complete a Daily Health Screen for any day they will be physically on the LTU campus.

LTU is using the GoCanvas App for your Daily Health Screenings. Earlier this morning, you should have received email in reference to activating your GoCanvas account. 

Please make sure you do the following:

1) Review and sign the LTU COVID-19 pledge. The pledge affirms your commitment to reducing the spread of COVID-19. It also highlights mandatory behaviors such as masking and social distancing while on campus. Every student needs to sign and agree to the LTU COVID-19 Pledge, but it only needs to be completed once.

2) Complete your daily health screening. This is not optional. It must be completed prior to your arrival on campus or leaving your university housing unit for the first time that day.  You can not be on campus if you have not completed the Daily Health Screening. The Daily Health Screening will provide you one of two potential results :

A) "Good to Go" - This allows you to be on campus for the day of the completed screeYou may be asked to show this to enter the classroom, cafeteria, field house, etc. , so consider taking a screenshot of the "Good to Go" image for that day. 

B) "Stay at Home" - Your screening has not cleared you to be on campus. If you are a commuter, please remain off campus. If you reside in University Housing, please remain in your housing unit. If you are a student-athlete, do not attend any practices or conditioning sessions. A Student Affairs staff member will contact you to review your screening results. They will identify your next steps and a potential timeline for your return to campus and classes.

Students who choose not to complete the Daily Health Screening will be in violation of the Student Code of Conduct. Sanctions for an initial violation will be a warning and probation. Repeated violations will result in a suspension.

LTU COVID-19 PLEDGE

I pledge to do my part to keep our community in good health as I return to the City of Southfield and to the Lawrence Technological University campus.

I understand I have a role in the fight against COVID-19 and commit to responsible actions and to being an accountable member of both the LTU and Southfield community.

I pledge to:

• Wear a mask when in any public space at LTU.
• Follow the No Visitor policy in University Housing.
• Complete my daily health screening with honest answers.
• Protect myself and others in high-traffic areas of campus or situations where physical distancing isn’t possible to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
• Keeping my hands clean and sanitized while on campus.
• Adhere to capacity limits in social situations to prevent high-spread scenarios.
• Modify my actions and encouraging others to do the same as guidelines and recommendations adapt over time.

By taking the pledge to keep Lawrence Technological University in good health, I accept responsibility for myself and my actions and will do my best to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

CARES ACT: HIGHER EDUCATION EMERGENCY RELIEF FUND (HEERF) - STUDENT PORTION 

LTU is working on disbursing the CARES Act in a timely manner to qualified students. There is very specific criteria on who qualifies for this fund. In order for a student to be eligible by the federal guidelines students must have a completed FAFSA on file for the 19/20 academic year and making Satisfactory Academic Progress. April 1 st is the deadline for a completed FAFSA to be evaluated for CARES Act funding.

Since these funds were approved for the sole purpose of addressing additional expenses students have encountered due to COVID-19 and are not to be applied to tuition or remaining balances on student accounts,  there is no impact on State financial aid   programs .

Qualified students will receive an email from Lisa Kujawa, Associate Provost with further instruction.

ALL SUMMER CLASSES TO BE ONLINE

I hope that this message will find you well and safe as we battle this pandemic. It seems that with all the difficulties that the social distancing and the stay-at-home mandates impose, we are starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully, relatively soon, we will be able to return to a state of normalcy in our personal, school, and work lives.

After careful consideration and a desire to continue to serve our students to the best of our ability, we have decided to offer all classes in the Summer 2020 semester through distance learning, using LTU’s online platforms.

Over the last few summers we increased the number of courses offered online in order to better serve you, our students, who had returned back home for the summer, be it across the country and throughout the world. Even for those living locally, taking courses online in the summer term has been very convenient in accommodating your summer work schedules. This summer, with all our students already at home, it does not make sense to open the campus for on-ground summer classes. 

We are very proud of all of our students, and also our faculty, for the ways you have adapted to a highly unusual spring semester. Lawrence Tech’s laptop program, coupled with your own ease with technology, helped us to transition quickly and with no significant problems. We are a technological university and it showed during our incredibly smooth shift to a completely online environment, with very little advance warning.

Due to the need to extend the Spring semester by one week because of COVID-19, and because final grades will not be available until May 20, 2020, we will postpone the start of this summer term to May 26, 2020. The summer term will still be 10 weeks long, ending on July 31, 2020. We hope that by postponing the start of the term to May 26, we will provide sufficient time for students both to rest and to evaluate their plans for taking summer courses. Note that we will return to our regular letter grading system for all classes offered in Summer 2020 as we are now all well-prepared for successfully managing online course delivery.

GRADING OPTION FOR SPRING CLASSES

I hope that during these past two weeks you are keeping safe and have adapted to this COVID-19 imposed lifestyle which affects every single one of us worldwide. Since my email of March 24, I’ve proudly seen faculty and students at Lawrence Tech transition to the whole new reality of an all online environment. You have been working hard and together to complete the semester. 

The transition proceeded extremely smoothly and we have quickly been able to solve the very few number of problems that have arisen. LTU’s laptop program gave all of us an extraordinary advantage in this transition.

I want to thank you all: students, faculty, the staff in e-Learning, HelpDesk, IT and Registrar’s office for working seamlessly with each other. You have been incredible!

As I promised, we are now ready to announce the grading system for the spring semester 2020. We received input from many of our students, from faculty, and from administrators, and understand that these are uncertain and difficult times for all.

After careful consideration, this semester’s grading policy is being amended:

1. Students have the choice to keep the letter grades for all their courses for the spring 2020 semester.

or

2. Students have the choice to have their letter grades in all courses converted to Credit/No Credit (Pass/Fail) for the spring 2020 semester.

The following process will be used by the Registrar’s office:

1. All faculty members will give letter grades to all students. The deadline for the submission of grades by faculty is May 20, 2020. 
2. All students will receive a form on May 20, 2020 that they must fill out if they want all their grades changed to Credit/No Credit (Pass/Fail) . 
3. Students will have the opportunity to see the letter grades they receive in Banner.
4. Students have the opportunity to complete the form and choose to have all their grades converted to Credit/No Credit until May 24 at midnight. ( Mixing of letter grades and Credit/No Credit grades for different courses will not be allowed.)
5. For students who choose the option of having all grades converted to Credit/No Credit (Pass/Fail): Letter grades from A through D- will be converted to “Credit” by the Registrar’s office. A letter grade of F will be converted to “No Credit” by the  R egistrar’s office. The GPA of students who choose the option of Credit/No Credit will not be affected. 
6. If by May 24 at midnight, the Registrar’s office does not receive a form with your selection, you will receive the letter grade for all of your courses.
7. Once you make your choice, you cannot reverse it.
8. For the Spring 2020, all student transcripts will include a notation that the semester was during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Additionally, since we have extended the semester by one week, the deadline to withdraw from a class has been similarly extended from April 10, 2020 to April 17, 2020.

We believe that our decision is most fair to all.  There are many factors to consider when you make your choice. Please seek the guidance of your academic adviser if you need to. For other questions please email nferguson@ltu.edu .

HOUSING REFUND

We appreciate your patience, and hope you and your family are safe and healthy. We know that students have questions in regard to housing and meal plan refunds and/or credits due to the impact of COVID-19.  Please note housing rates vary depending on the building a student resides in. Here is a brief summary of LTU’s policy:

• Students who resided in Donley Hall, Reuss Hall or East Hall will receive a prorated amount of $1,100 for their housing and $700 for their meal plan. 
• Students who resided in a one bedroom apartment in South Housing will receive a prorated amount of $1,000 for their housing and $700 for their meal plan. Students who resided in a two bedroom in South Housing will receive $700 for their housing and $700 for their meal plan.
• Students who resided in Arbor Lofts will receive a prorated amount of $1,400.
• Students with a meal plan exemption are not eligible for a prorated meal plan refund. 
• Students with a reduced plan due to an approved disability accommodation, please contact housing@ltu.edu for the meal plan refund amount.
• Graduate assistants and resident assistants are not eligible for housing and meal plan refunds.
• For all students, credits will first be applied to any outstanding student account balance.
• Students who have petitioned to graduate will receive a refund check.
• Students who have remained in University Housing and/or Arbor Lofts will not be eligible for a credit or refund.

Students who have not petitioned to graduate may choose to have a credit applied to their account for future charges or receive a refund check. Students selecting a refund check, please e-mail Michele Hines, mhines@ltu.edu , in Student Accounts by 11:59 p.m. on April 12, 2020. Students who do not respond by April 12, 2020 will automatically receive a credit on their accounts.

USE OF STUDENT EMPLOYEES DURING STAY HOME, STAY SAFE

LTU student employees are classified as non-essential and will not be working on campus during the current “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order.  In most cases, student employees can not complete their job functions off-campus. Exceptions to work off-campus as a student employee must be approved by the Dean of Students. Only supervisors can request an exception. Supervisors should email  studean@ltu.edu . Please provide the first and last name of the student, and the necessary work responsibilities. An approval or disapproval will be communicated within 24 hours.

Dear Students,

These are uncertain times for all of us, and at Lawrence Tech both faculty and administrators are working hard to ensure that you finish your semester and complete your courses without major difficulties. Although taking all courses online is a change, there are many students who already take several courses online, and even courses on ground make very heavy use of the Canvas learning platform  to help students manage their learning. 

I hope that this transition, although unexpected, will not be very difficult because most, if not all of us, are very savvy with our technological tools. In particular, LTU’s laptop program makes it so much easier. Our faculty know that all of our undergraduates have been provided a laptop with the specific software they will need. This offers you a great advantage over most other schools.

Because of actions at some other universities, there is a question about the grading system and whether to go Pass/Fail. At this time Lawrence Tech is maintaining our grading system. We just started online teaching Monday and unless there are major disruptions, there is no reason for us to change your grading system at this time.  We have obligations to you and to our accrediting organizations. We will continue to evaluate the evolution of COVID-19, and we will continue to analyze the results of our online transition. In three weeks we will be in a position to decide if we should continue with our current grading system or if there are appropriate modifications that should be done.
