May 14, 2025

Southfield, Mich. — Shannon Timmons, PhD, a distinguished professor of chemistry and chair of the Department of Natural Sciences at Lawrence Technological University, will deliver the keynote address at this year’s Crockett Midtown High School of Science and Medicine’s graduation ceremony.

The event is scheduled to take place on May 30, 2025, at 6 p.m. at the storied Detroit Opera House, a five-star venue to honor five-star achievements. The Opera House will provide complimentary parking for guests.

As an esteemed educator and the director of LTU’s Quest Program, Timmons teaches organic chemistry in the Department of Natural Sciences. She is originally from Canada and earned her BSc in Chemistry from Acadia University in 2002 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. At LTU, Timmons focuses on biologically active organic molecules, working on projects involving aspirin analogs, bisphenol A analogs, and contrast agents for medical imaging.

Timmons said LTU offers numerous dual enrollment science courses at Crockett and has provided hands-on science-related outreach activities at the high school and on campus at LTU. Her keynote speech will underscore the importance of merging academic excellence with real-world applications, a fitting testament to Crockett’s dual emphasis on science and medicine.

“As a medicinal chemist and educator, I see every day how science has the power to transform lives,” Timmons said. “Speaking to graduates from a high school dedicated to science and health-related careers — the next generation of scientists, healers, and innovators — is both humbling and deeply inspiring.”
