Calling all innovators: $250,000 in prizes available for the best industrial decarbonization solutions

August 22, 2023

SOUTHFIELD—The Centrepolis Accelerator at Lawrence Technological University, in partnership with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy, Whirlpool Corporation, Gerdau, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and Breakthrough Energy, announced the launch of the Industrial Decarbonization Innovation Challenge.

The challenge aims to discover and support groundbreaking technologies and startups focused on decarbonizing the industrial sector.

The challenge focuses on three main areas:

  1. Decarbonizehow we build things
  2. Decarbonize thebuilt environment
  3. Decarbonize through thecirculareconomy

Startups and innovators are encouraged to submit their applications starting Aug. 21, with the submission deadline set for Nov. 30. Finalists will be announced in January 2024. Those finalists will have an opportunity to engage in a paid pilot project where up to $250,000 will be made available to support industrial decarbonization demonstrations and other technology development services.

The Industrial Decarbonization Innovation Challenge offers participants the opportunity to demonstrate their technologies, products and services to industry leaders, meet potential commercial partners, and climate tech ecosystem disruptors alike. Selected companies will be able to engage in paid pilots, secure potential commercial relationships, networking opportunities, and mentorship from industry experts.

“The U.S. industrial sector accounts for approximately 35% of total U.S. end-use energy consumption and 33% of total U.S. energy consumption.  Michigan has a strong industrial base with over 10,000 manufacturers. It is essential that we support their transition to reduce energy consumption and emissions. By doing this effectively we also provide our local manufacturers with an opportunity to improve their operational margins and improve their global competitiveness,” said Dan Radomski, CEO of the Centrepolis Accelerator.

Centrepolis Accelerator, Whirlpool Corporation, Gerdaud, EGLE, MEDC, NREL and Breakthrough Energy invite startups and established companies with portfolio technologies fitting the challenge criteria to participate in this groundbreaking initiative.

Challenge partners hope to drive innovation and create a more sustainable future for the industrial sector.
