Students entering with a Master of Science degree in computer science must complete a minimum of 48 credit hours of additional graduate work to earn the doctorate. Of those 48 credit hours, at least 42 must be dissertation research, with an additional 6 credits of advanced coursework.
Students entering with a bachelor’s degree must complete at least 66 credit hours of graduate work beyond their baccalaureate degree: at least 24 credit hours of coursework and 42 credit hours of dissertation research.
Qualifying Exam
Required to demonstrate their aptitude and mastery of the fundamentals in computer science, including applied mathematics, by passing a written (and possibly oral in addition) Qualifying Examination
It is to be administered not less than once yearly and will occur after the student completes their preliminary coursework. Upon successfully passing the Qualifying Exam, the student is admitted to candidacy for a PhD degree.
