Visiting Scholars Grant Program

About

This Visiting Scholars Grant Program supports short-term visits to LTU by external collaborators to foster inter-institutional research partnerships. Funding is intended to facilitate activities such as developing grant proposals, preparing major publications, or initiating innovative research projects.

» Award Details

  • Funding up to $2,500 per visit (may be adjusted by available budget).
  • Eligible expenses include travel, lodging, and related visit costs.
  • Visits can range from 2-3 days

» Eligibility

  • Full-time faculty members in CoAS may apply (tenure-line faculty will receive priority).
  • Applicants must identify and secure commitment from an external collaborator based at another accredited university or research institution.
  • Collaborative visits must focus on advancing a concrete research product (grant proposal, manuscript, or pilot project).

» Application Requirement

  1. Project Summary (max 1000 words):
    • Research area and significance.
    • Goals for the visit (e.g., proposal outline, manuscript sections, analysis plan).
  2. Visit Plan:
    • Proposed visit dates and duration (2-3 days).
    • Detailed itinerary or schedule highlighting key activities.
  3. Collaborator Letter of Commitment:
    • A short letter/email from the external collaborator confirming availability and intent to participate in the visit.
  4. Budget and Justification:
    • Estimated travel and lodging costs.
    • Any other allowable expenses.

» Expected Activities

  • During the visit: active collaboration sessions, planning, drafting, or problem-solving as
    per the visit plan.
  • Within 3 months post-visit: a brief report (1–2 pages) describing progress toward the collaborative product, next steps, and any preliminary outcomes (e.g., submission of a proposal or manuscript draft).

» Evaluation Criteria

  • Quality and feasibility of the collaboration plan and visit itinerary.
  • Potential impact of the collaboration (likelihood of external funding, publication, or significant research progress).
  • Budget justification and appropriateness.

» Application Deadline

Applications are accepted all year while funds are still available. 

» Award Notification

The Dean’s office will provide motification of the award.

Use Your Cell Phone as a Document Camera in Zoom

  • What you will need to have and do
  • Download the mobile Zoom app (either App Store or Google Play)
  • Have your phone plugged in
  • Set up video stand phone holder

From Computer

Log in and start your Zoom session with participants

From Phone

  • Start the Zoom session on your phone app (suggest setting your phone to “Do not disturb” since your phone screen will be seen in Zoom)
  • Type in the Meeting ID and Join
  • Do not use phone audio option to avoid feedback
  • Select “share content” and “screen” to share your cell phone’s screen in your Zoom session
  • Select “start broadcast” from Zoom app. The home screen of your cell phone is now being shared with your participants.

To use your cell phone as a makeshift document camera

  • Open (swipe to switch apps) and select the camera app on your phone
  • Start in photo mode and aim the camera at whatever materials you would like to share
  • This is where you will have to position what you want to share to get the best view – but you will see ‘how you are doing’ in the main Zoom session.
