Hex Chair

Major

Product Design [BS]

Description

Drawing from inspiration of the Great Lakes, I wanted to encapsulate the relaxing nature of sitting by the lake. The Hex Seat is intended to work in combination with a coffee table that I previously made. Both pieces are inspired by the structure of Michigan's state stone, the Petoskey stone. Petoskey stones are fossilized coral pieces, which have been smoothed down by the waves of the great lakes, giving them a hexagonal look.

The entire structure of the chair is made with Sugar Maple, sourced from a tree that fell down in my yard during a storm in 2015. We were able to get the wood milled into rough cut slabs by a local Amish lumbermill. The goal of the project was to take rough cut slabs of wood and use complex woodworking methods to produce something beautiful.
