The Soo Health and Wellness Centre
MajorArchitecture [BS]
DescriptionThe Soo Health and Wellness Centre, housed among the shores and trails of Sault Ste. Marie’s Ashbond Bay Park strives to be a recreational hub and fitness-focused facility openly accessible to all. Through the use of demonstrative design methodologies coupled with human-first space integration, the building is able to bolster positive mental and physical exercise.
The center strives for L.E.E.D Net Zero compliance both through its materiality, lighting design, and technical intricacies. Consisting primarily of mass timber construction assisted through slight steel augmentations pushes this space to be more integrated within its naturally wooded environment. Furnished with activity facilities that include an all-encompassing gymnasium housing both basketball and badminton courts, an Olympic-length pool, and rock climbing facilities coupled with leisure pools and bouldering spaces. Training and endurance spaces such as an indoor track, weight lifting spaces, and multiple body-weight exercise facilities are also included to service multiple different use cases. Meticulously designed around the entire Soo community; classrooms, care suites, and various mercantile spaces also live within the center’s diverse ecosystem.
