The Pointe

Major

Architecture [BS]

Description

The primary objective of the project is to establish a significant landmark in Sault Ste. Marie, fostering economic growth through tourism and community engagement. The Pointe, envisioned as a recreation center, seamlessly incorporates historic elements from its surroundings, instilling a sense of familiarity and sensitivity among residents. The architectural design is driven by a purpose of structure systems beyond mere functionality, aiming to make a bold statement and delineate hierarchies within its spaces. This approach ensures a cohesive integration with the envelope system, strategically placing glazed areas at points of congregation. The central zone plays a pivotal role, functioning as the anchor for the entire structure and featuring a series of patterned facades that underscore its significance. Within this zone, a network of courtyards is transparently enclosed by 10 ft by 10 ft rib vaults, offering diverse user experiences with daylighting throughout the day. The overall concept revolves around harmonizing the building with its structure and envelope system, thereby creating an integral and captivating focal point for the city.
