The Soo Recreation Center
MajorArchitecture [BS]
DescriptionThe Soo Recreation Center is a community sports and recreation facility thoughtfully designed to support both the physical health and mental wellness of its local community. The development is to be located at Ashmun Bay Park in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, and is intended to support both the Ontario and Michigan associated cities collectively known as “The Soo” community.
The center is to include modern facilities for recreational activities such as basketball, swimming, rock climbing, running, and more. Inclusive of people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, the project also includes flexible activity spaces, classrooms and a childcare center.
Designed with Mass Timber Construction and innovative strategies for sustainability, the biophilic design of the facility showcases a unique immersion with the natural environment that is intended to restore the connection between people and the natural world.
Overall, the project aims to achieve the Living Building Challenge Certification through intentional material, daylighting and programmatic choices that responds to the specific needs of the Soo community and the unique bioclimatic conditions of the Sault Ste. Marie area.
