The Soo Recreation Center

Major

Architecture [BS]

Description

This Architecture project aims to create a recreation center in Sault Ste. Marie Michigan. The center includes a pool, gym, workout rooms, café, lounge and care suite. It is located on the St. Mary’s River in a historic and industrial district. Due to this, the building program was not the only factor in the design, but also the relation with the water and the harmonization of the surrounding buildings affected the design.

The building and the renovation of the entire site strive to be LEED Certified. This takes into consideration solar, heating, recycled material, building material, vegetation, user experiences, and other factors.

The design of the building hopes to create an experience for users. It allows movement throughout the building and connects different aspects of the site through the building. The building also allows for multiple different viewing points in the various athletic areas. This means that people can use the spaces for working out, but also for connecting with the community.
